Adopted on October 31, 2025, Resolution 2797 on the Sahara marks a turning point. For the first time, the UN Security Council has recognized Morocco’s autonomy plan as the basis for resolving the dispute. This  historic text isthe result of twenty years of painstaking diplomacy,  but also the start of something more concrete: renewed negotiations, a redefined UN role, and the presentation of an updated and expanded for autonomy by Morocco.

On November 4, in a statement from the Royal Cabinet, King Mohammed VI gave the resolution a highly symbolic and political dimension by declaring October 31 “Unity Day” (Aid Al Wahda), a national holiday and new occasion for royal pardons. This is a date sure to become a lasting symbol of Morocco’s national unity and territorial integrity.

What the Sahara resolution changes

Since 2007, Security Council resolutions have praised Morocco’s “serious and credible efforts.” This new resolution goes further: it establishes Morocco’s  plan for autonomy as the foundation for negotiationa, referring explicitly to “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.”

The text no longer mentions a referendum,an option still claimed by the Polisario and Algeria. The UN now acknowledges that any settlement will come not from a vote on independence, but from a negotiated political agreement.

The results of the  the Security Council vote, 11 votes in favor, 0 against, and 3 abstentions (China, Russia, Pakistan), underscores Morocco’s growing diplomatic strength. For a resolution to pass, at least nine votes are needed with no veto from any of the five permanent members (the United States, France, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia). The Council also includes ten non-permanent members, elected for two-year terms and renewed by half each year.

In this context, Morocco secured a clear majority, backed by Washington, Paris, London, Seoul, Copenhagen, and Ljubljana. Algeria, a non-permanent member, refused to take part in the vote — a telling sign of its diplomatic isolation.

The coming big bang

The Sahara resolution now commits Morocco to update its  plan for autonomy. The 2007 version already envisions an elected legislative assembly, a regional government, a local judiciary, and broad powers over taxation, development, environment, culture, infrastructure, health, and education. The state would retain sovereign prerogatives, such as  defense, foreign policy, religion, the flag, and the currency.

King Mohammed VI announced that the plan will be revised to incorporate the 2011 Constitution, the 2015 regionalization reform, and the 2021 development models. This effort represents nothing less than an institutional paradigm shift. It will require redefining the distribution of powers and resources — going far beyond the current framework of decentralization.

Why the negotiations will take place in the United States

The Sahara resolution explicitly mentions “recognition to the United States for its willingness to host meetings in support of the Personal Envoy’s mission.”

According to legal scholar and political analyst Mustapha Sehimi, that’s a clear signal: “It reflects Washington’s active involvement in restarting negotiations between the parties.”

Massad Boulos, special advisor to former President Donald Trump, confirmed on France 24 Arabic that the four parties concerned — Morocco, the Polisario, Algeria, and Mauritania — will be invited to participate in talks “without preconditions.”

According to him, the United States “is counting on the wisdom of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to approach this new phase constructively.”

The first American draft included a 60-day timeline and a short renewal of the MINURSO mandate; under Russian pressure, those clauses were removed. “No deadline has been set, but the process will accelerate,” explains Mustapha Sehimi. A strategic report from the UN Secretary-General is expected by April 2026, ahead of a new resolution in the fall.

Three possible scenarios

According to Mustapha Sehimi, Resolution 2797’s main point  remains the revival of the settlement process, but several paths are still open:

1 / Effective resumption of negotiations:
This is the preferred option. Although resistant, Algeria has already taken part in two round tables (Geneva 2018 and 2019). Should it accept the US invitation, dialogue could begin as early as the first half of 2026. According to this framework, the Moroccan plan would serve as the primary benchmark, with room to adjust the details of the implementation of the plan for autonomy..

2 / Algerian obstruction:
If Algiers continues to resist  “its stance would become increasingly untenable,” says Sehimi. The United States could exert diplomatic and financial pressure on Algeria, such as freezing certain cooperative programs, reducing international aid, or politically isolating it in multilateral forums. Meanwhile, the pro-Moroccan consensus would continue to grow.

The Security Council, in theory, has the authority to act under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, meaning it could impose binding measures in case of a threat to peace: economic sanctions, embargoes, asset freezes, or peacekeeping deployments. But this remains purely hypothetical for the Sahara issue, which currently falls within the realm of political dialogue, not coercion.

3 / Prolonged status quo:
Maintaining MINURSO without political progress. This  scenario is deemed increasingly unsustainable. It would undermine the credibility of both the Council and Washington, now committed to reviving the process.

The UN: A favorable framework for Morocco’s next vote

The Sahara resolution extends MINURSO’s mandate until October 31, 2026. That means by that date, the Security Council will have to vote again — not to redefine the political foundation (which is now undeniably Morocco’s plan ), but to evaluate progress: how negotiations are advancing, whether the ceasefire holds, and how engaged the four parties are.

In other words, the next vote will measure how the current resolution is being implemented and, , if necessary, adjust the MINURSO mandate or the mission of the Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura.

By then, the geopolitical landscape will have changed. Starting January 2026, seven new non-permanent members will join the Security Council for two years, alongside the five permanent ones (the United States, France, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia).

Among these newcomers are Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Liberia, all countries that have already opened consulates in Laâyoune or Dakhla, recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. Their arrival will strengthen the bloc of states supporting the autonomy plan, already backed by several European and African allies.

The result?  Morocco will approach the next vote with a structurally favorable majority, supported both by African allies and major Western powers. “Morocco now enjoys  unprecedented support: it has the legitimacy of the text, the backing of the great powers, and a solid African foundation,” summarizes Mustapha Sehimi.

On the ground: A reality already taking shape

While diplomacy lays the groundwork, development in Morocco’s Sahara is surging ahead. Over thirty foreign consulates have opened in Laâyoune and Dakhla. Major projects — the Dakhla Atlantic port, new roads, industrial zones, tourism developments, and renewable energy programs — are transforming the region into an African hub linking the Atlantic, the Sahel, and the Gulf of Guinea.

These investments, reinforced by the Sahara resolution,establish  the ground what the UN now affirms politically: the irreversible integration of Morocco’s southern provinces into the Kingdom.

What comes next?

The coming months will be decisive:

• Finalization of the updated autonomy plan
• Preparatory consultations led by Staffan de Mistura
• US-hosted meetings between the four parties
• And the Secretary-General’s report before the next vote, expected in October 2026 

The challenge now is no longer to convince; it is  to build. It’s time to effectuate the plan for autonomy , strengthen alliances within the Council, and turn diplomatic success into tangible governance.

The Sahara resolution is not the end of a conflict, but the beginning of a new era. Morocco no longer needs to plead its case; it is now setting the terms.

Their MO, however, is familiar: horizontal organization, biting humor, and creativity amplified by digital tools. The message? Out with the old world, in with a generation that refuses to be passive—with energy, flashes of brilliance, and a streak of naivety. Our editorial team tries to make sense of it all. 

Sketching the Gen Z profile: where they’re coming from

Born between 1997 and 2010, Gen Z has grown up online, where the Internet is its own ecosystem. Their instinct isn’t to “find a leader” but to open a server, launch an FAQ, set a time. Their language is visual and instant: short-form videos, subtitles, voiceovers, and punchlines designed to go viral. They distrust parties and unions, preferring fluid collectives where roles rotate.

What are their guiding principles?  Dignity, equal opportunity, true meritocracy, transparency. They’re fearless, sometimes to the point of recklessness, but it’s this raw boldness that gives them media impact and influence over public opinion. In Morocco, they’ve added their own twist: constant code-switching (Darija, French, English) and an ability to craft a language that works everywhere, from the neighborhood to the global TikTok.

What ignited the blaze?  Shared desperation and daily  realities

Three main grievances are universal: jobs and purchasing power (degree ≠ employment), corruption (lack of meritocracy ), and generational injustice (the previous generation pulled the ladder up from behind them)s). In Morocco, the blaze is fueled by specific, urgent factors:  healthcare, education, and the demand for decent public services.

While some write off their arguments as seeming entitled and merely a  generational whim,how can one speak of patience when inflation erodes purchasing power, the future seems blocked, and the planet overheats? For Gen Z, impatience is not merely a cultural trait—it’s a survival reflex.

Organization: “be water,” Maghreb-style

The mantra comes from Hong Kong protests in 2019: be water—fluid, elusive, appear, disappear, repeat. In Morocco, it manifests through  Discord/Telegram for logistics, TikTok/Instagram for impact. Horizontal doesn’t mean chaotic; it’s modular: rotating roles, temporary accounts, shared documents. They test, adjust, and relaunch like a startup refining its product. Thanks to the dual channels of WhatsApp/Stories, a single visual can traverse the country in an afternoon. The risk? Losing coherence and sending mixed signals.

Language, creativity, and humor: when pop culture becomes politics

Gen Z communicates in sharable references: One Piece pirate flags, Hunger Games salutes, Pepe memes repurposed—global symbols adopted because they’re instantly readable and easily replicated.

In Morocco, these icons blend with local flair: Darija, inside jokes, familiar sounds. The result is a hybrid language that breaks through political jargon and even rallies non-activists. Above all, this generation is a communication prodigy. It wields memes like others wield editorial power. In two hours, a video montage can rival a column. Memes democratize, lighten the mood, and accelerate messages. In the Kingdom, this skill is evident: instant remixes, reworked audio, fake tutorials, carefully timed subtitles. The joke, “last in public school, first in memes”, seems relevant here… andumor is one of their strategies.

What Gen Z wants (beyond the slogans)

Their demands are clear: decent healthcare and education, an end to nepotism,, institutions that provide more than lip service , measurable results, and a real seat at the table.  Gen Z doesn’t dream of “later”; it insists on now. Another key trait: an intersectional approach.

Climate, gender equality, social justice, diversity, individual freedoms—the struggles mix rather than rank hierarchically. But once the foundation is set, the horizon blurs: how to finance it, who governs, and how to organize?  The grievences are clear, but how to move forward less so. This is both the strength and limitation of this generation: a clear, immediate energy, but a long-term vision still in development.

The clash: real-time vs. long-term

The real divide isn’t ideological—it’s temporal. What they call “the old world” thinks long-term: procedures, caution, stages. Gen Z operates in real-time: horizontal, clear, tangible.  The former says, “wait,” the latter hears, “you’re stalling us.” Both sides have some truth to them: long-term thinking avoids structural errors; real-time action prevents stagnation.

Casablanca: Villa Carl Ficke, a memory capsule of the city

Casablanca has a new gem for history lovers. Opened in late February 2025, the Casablanca Memory Museum traces the city’s history from the early days of Anfa to the Art Deco era and even its football culture. Housed in Villa Carl Ficke—a stunning architectural jewel reminiscent of an Italian palace built in 1913—the museum offers a deep dive into the city’s past. The villa has changed hands over the years, belonging to Germany, then France, and finally Morocco, and now hosts historical documents and works from the Casablanca School of the 1960s and 70s. The restoration of the once-abandoned villa and its gardens was led by Moroccan architect and anthropologist Salima Naji, who also introduced the country’s first “material library,” showcasing the secrets of heritage conservation.

Rabat: The Chellah site, a journey through time

Reopened in 2024, the Chellah is a must-see historical site in Morocco’s museum capital. Spanning over 7,000 square meters, it offers a glimpse into 2,000 years of history, from the Roman ruins of Sala Colonia to the medieval Merinid necropolis. Visitors can wander through the remains of the Khalwa Mosque’s grand arcades and the fortress walls, punctuated by 23 watchtowers, which enclose a vast garden designed in the 20th century by architect Maurice Tranchant de Lunel. Towering above the ruins, white storks have made this historic landmark their home. For budding archaeologists, the Chellah remains an active excavation site, where new discoveries continue to be unearthed. 

One of the biggest additions since its reopening is its culinary offerings. The Patio restaurant now occupies the former palace foundouk, while the Ciconia café provides breathtaking views of the gardens, with a menu curated by Chef Hicham Aouad. Throughout the year, the Chellah hosts cultural events such as the Jazz au Chellah festival and Mawazine.

For Ramadan 2025, the Chellah is one of the museums in Morocco featuring a special program, “Celestial Nights,” with pottery workshops, nighttime photography sessions, and a specially crafted  ftour menu.

Marrakech: A world of beauty at the Museum of Adornment Arts

One of the most visually striking museums in Morocco, the Museum of Adornment Arts, opened in winter 2023, is a true masterpiece. Designed by renowned Franco-Lebanese architects Michel Charrière and Joseph Achkar, the museum is housed within a collection of riads in the Kasbah district, near the Badii Palace and Saadian Tombs. Centered around an octagonal courtyard that floods the space with light, it showcases the remarkable collection of Swiss art lovers Marlène and Paolo Gallone.

Over 40 years, the couple amassed thousands of pieces, 3,000 of which are displayed at the museum. The three levels, with exposed brick walls and polished concrete floors, are bathed in dim light, making the adornments, ornaments, and ceremonial garments stand out. Each item was chosen for its “emotional power” and originates from Africa, Central Europe, and Asia.

The top floor houses one of Morocco’s most extensive Berber jewelry collections, presented on a striking background—a river of minerals displayed under glass, symbolizing the natural inspiration behind these rare pieces.

The museum’s rooftop terrace, designed by Panpriape, a landscape design firm specializing in ecological gardens, features Shams, a café-restaurant blending Levantine and Mediterranean cuisine, with an unrivaled view of the Atlas Mountains and the Koutoubia Mosque.

Tangier: Donabo Botanical Gardens, a seaside sanctuary

The Donabo Gardens, a public botanical park founded by private owners, opened in 2022 as a heartfelt family tribute. For co-founder Lalla Malika El Alaoui, the space is filled with memories of her late father. Years later, she transformed the family land into an open garden for all to create new memories together.

With the help of Paul Belvoir, a British artist and decorator who fell in love with Tangier, they designed this exceptional space overlooking the sea. Nestled along the Cap Spartel road, within the Rmilat forest, Donabo Gardens is dedicated to organic cultivation. Flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs, trees, and shrubs make it a sensory museum of local and international flora.

The Mint Labyrinth leads to the Japanese Garden, complete with a pond and a small stone bridge, before opening onto the rose garden and vegetable patch. The latter supplies the Donabo Gardens café-restaurant, which serves seasonal dishes, as well as the shop, where visitors can find artisanal preserves and jams. This one-of-a-kind museum also hosts cooking classes, Andalusian music concerts, and lectures. A particular highlight is the annual Tomato and Chili Festival in summer, which celebrates these plants in all their uses. .

Fes: Al Batha Museum, a palace of dreams

A beloved landmark for both locals and tourists, the Al Batha Museum is one of Morocco’s recently reopened cultural treasures, welcoming visitors again in February 2025 after years of restoration. Once a royal palace of the Alaouite dynasty, this stunning Hispano-Moorish residence—modeled after the grand Andalusian palaces—has served many purposes since its construction under Sultan Hassan I. It was the childhood home of Sultan Moulay AbdelAziz, who later experimented with early photography here. During the French Protectorate, it became an ethnographic museum in 1915 before being classified as a national monument. Today, thanks to Morocco’s National Foundation of Museums, it has been transformed into the Museum of Islamic Arts, featuring an extraordinary collection.

Fes is renowned as the capital of traditional craftsmanship, and the Al Batha Museum pays homage to this heritage. Out of the 7,000 artifacts it holds, 700 masterpieces are on display, ranging from astrolabes to beautifully calligraphed manuscripts. One of the highlights is the rare “Adouate Al Andalous” minbar, one of the few preserved examples of its kind in the world. But the showstopper is undoubtedly the room dedicated to Moroccan ceramics, showcasing exquisite examples of the famous “Fes blue” pottery.

Adding to its charm, this vast palace is surrounded by a magnificent garden, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Paved with intricate zellige mosaics, the pathways lead to a towering, century-old green oak tree, with several shaded resting spots by the fountains. In springtime, jacarandas and mimosas bloom alongside palm trees, orange groves, and aromatic plants, creating an oasis of tranquility.

Last but not least among our favorite 2025 courses is the Entrepreneurial Mindset program, taught by faculty from the University of Maryland and hosted on Coursera (available in English and French). This online course is a comprehensive guide to launching a startup, covering everything from benchmarking and business plans to pitching and fundraising. Access to the course is free, but to take exams and earn a certificate, you’ll need a Coursera subscription ($25–$39 per month).

In this first article of our series dedicated to post-bac orientation, we’re tackling the bane of students (and parents!) of the French education system: Parcoursup! Since 2018, this platform has been the gateway for high school seniors to submit their choices for higher education. To fully understand the stakes, avoid pitfalls, and focus on what really works, we consulted Laila Benyahya, a guidance counselor who works independently and knows the ins and outs of Parcoursup. She sheds light on the best way to prepare for higher education.

Around December 20th, Parcoursup will be open for students to explore. For those who don’t know yet, this platform from the French Ministry of National Education is essentially a search engine. The site lists more than 15,000 programs: from preparatory classes for top schools to bachelor’s degrees, technical diplomas, and more.

Understanding Parcoursup

Choosing a study path is something to think about, discover, and most importantly, experience. As the guidance professional we met reminded us: “Don’t hesitate to use your personal network for your children. Arrange for them to meet, over coffee or after a workout, with professionals like a doctor, architect, accountant, banker, etc.”

Additionally, the Thôtis website is a highly practical tool recommended by Laila Benyahya. As a reference media for orientation, it helps young people find their way. With intuitive videos and youth-friendly resources, Thôtis provides numerous tips for high school students. Anything that helps them get a more concrete idea of the job they wish to pursue is beneficial.

At school, if your child is lucky enough to have a PRIO (resource person in information and orientation), they should not hesitate to meet them (parents are also welcome). The school’s librarian is another valuable resource. Encourage your child to visit and ask for information on different fields that may interest them. This helps refine their choices for higher education and career prospects. By the end of December, when the platform opens, your child should already have some clear ideas about their orientation.

Laila Benyahya emphasizes that understanding Parcoursup is essential. Whether it means spending hours scrolling through the platform’s various sections with your child or seeking the help of a counselor who knows the site well, it’s worth it. There are numerous filters to apply, and the FAQ section is full of useful answers.

Making smart choices

After exploring the platform in depth, from January 20th, your children will need to register their profiles and make their initial choices and sub-choices. No need to stress; they can make changes until March 29th.

To do it right, Laila Benyahya recommends conducting a careful and realistic benchmarking of relevant programs with your children. The data from Parcoursup, which is linked to the Ministry of Education, must be analyzed thoroughly. Several criteria come into play, such as the ranking of the school or university, the rates of refused applications, and the rates of accepted students based on their previous schools, among others. This process, which may seem complex, is crucial to giving your child the best possible chance.

It’s better to apply with precision and strategy rather than submitting applications left and right. Many young people mistakenly believe that they increase their chances by multiplying choices across various fields, but this is a classic post-bac orientation error. Students will have until early April to finalize their applications.

Securing your choices

The most important thing to remember is that your child’s post-bac orientation depends on several factors. Laila Benyahya stresses that this is a tripartite relationship benefiting the higher education project, involving parents, school staff, and of course, the motivation of your child. To strengthen their application and secure access to their chosen schools and universities, Laila Benyahya offers a few final tips.

On Parcoursup, during the finalization phase, your child’s teachers will complete a “fiche avenir” (future sheet), an online space where they will provide their overall assessment of your child’s engagement and skills. This document will be reviewed by the admissions staff of the institutions to which your child applies. Therefore, it’s important that your child discuss their post-bac orientation plans with their teachers (not just their main subject teachers).

The goal is also to encourage your child to gain autonomy and take on more responsibility. They are on the verge of becoming a young adult and a future student. They can also ask teachers who know them well to write recommendation letters, which can be a valuable addition to their application.

Finally, let’s remember that everyone can make mistakes. Choosing a path at 17 or 18 can lead to some missteps, and it’s essential to be understanding with your teens. Fortunately, Parcoursup allows students to reorient freely the following year. The platform offers opportunities for new students to pivot toward different paths or to choose entirely new fields.

Their HR consultants share five crucial points that candidates often overlook. Get ready to be surprised !

1. Naturalness and personality

“If about fifteen years ago, recruiters only focused on job skills, today, they’re more interested in finding a character and personality that matches the company culture.” So, forget about hiring solely based on diplomas and software you’ve mastered.  Don’t forget, when a recruiter asks to meet a candidate, their CV has already caught their attention. What they want to know now are their soft skills and behavioral competencies, such as communication abilities and social intelligence. Alsovery important nowadays are autonomy and adaptability.

2. Conciseness

During an interview, the recruiter pays attention to how the candidate expresses themselves. They shouldn’t drown in a flood of details but should be able to introduce themselves in three minutes: background, personality, achievements, etc.  It’s essential to make the right choices and highlight experiences that add weight to the application. “You shouldn’t hesitate to ask the recruiter if they want you to focus more on your background, your last position, or the task you previously accomplished that seems most relevant to the skills required for this job.” The goal is to understand the interviewer’s expectations and not to blurt out  everything, creating a desire for dialogue.

3. The questions asked

Some candidates tend to forget that a job is a win-win relationship. The recruiter and the candidate need each other equally. So, for the interviewer, it’s crucial to see the candidate’s curiosity and expectations for the role. “If you couldn’t find enough details about the company while preparing for the interview, you can have a series of questions ready. A recruiter notes if the candidate is interested in the management style within the teams or in the company’s culture and vision.” They should feel that the candidate is looking to thrive within the company in the long term.

4. The choice of hobbies

Did you think that little line on your CV was unimportant? Think again! It’s a trap set by recruiters that most candidates fall into. “If the candidate doesn’t have a true passion or standout interests, it’s better not to include anything. Forget reading, cinema, and traveling. The recruiter will jump on this to see if the candidate is lying or if their answers are interesting.” However, if the answers help reveal the personality of the applicant, it’s a great way to stand out.

5. Ambition

No, it’s not a dirty word! You’re allowed, even expected, to show ambition. “No one wants a candidate who’s just looking to clock in and out. If you’re aiming to join a company, it’s essential to demonstrate your willingness to learn and grow, whether vertically or horizontally.” That’s why recruiters are interested in profiles that want to step out of their comfort zone and aren’t just looking for a role similar to their current position. “It always comes back to the human element before pure qualifications. A recruiter might prefer someone who shows a willingness to learn over another who already has the skills but whose motivation is unclear. It’s even possible that the role could be adapted to fit the chosen candidate!”

We’d all rather forget the last Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where we came back with only one medal (in track and field).  Between then and now, there was the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Our Lions elevated Morocco’s colors so high and far that we can only “n’driou niya,” as Walid Regragui would say. Combat sports, running, equestrian sports, surfing, or team sports – we’ll tell you in which events the kingdom has the best chances of shining. Sure bets in track and field 

In track and field,  no fewer than 13 athletes will compete for medals in the 400-meter hurdles, 800 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters, and marathon events. Morocco has a strong chance of finishing on the podiums. The kingdom’s love affair with running was officially recognized in 1992 with the famous Khalid Skah, continuing with Hicham El Guerrouj, who broke numerous records before finally winning gold at the 2000 Athens Olympics.

Among the Moroccan athletes at this year’s Olympics, Soufiane El Bakkali stands out. He runs the 3000 meters and was a world champion in 2019, then an Olympic champion (yes, he’s the one who won our only medal) in Japan in 2020. He has all the luck  on his side, and we should closely follow him on Monday, August 5th, starting at 5:30 PM. In long-distance running, keep an eye on Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi and Kaoutar Farkoussi. In the 800 meters, Assia Raziki and Anass Essayi will try to establish themselves as new leading athletes in the event. 

As always, track and field  will hold a special place at the Olympics, and we hope Morocco will too!

Football takes center stage

At the time of writing, Morocco has beaten Argentina (2-0), and the national fervor is at its peak! The Moroccan Olympic football team, coached by former international footballer Tarik Sektioui, is making a grand return to the competition after a 12-year absence. We are counting heavily on this qualification to keep the momentum going and delight the spectators. To name just a few Moroccan players, we are betting on Hakimi, Rahimi, and Ben Seghir Eliesse!

Strong contenders in martial arts 

The Moroccan delegation includes 17 women. Among them, Khadija Mardi is THE distinguished boxer who caught everyone’s attention when she became the heavyweight world champion in New Delhi in 2023. She will be in the ring for round 16 on July 31st at 7 PM at the Arena Stade de Paris. We wouldn’t miss her match for anything!

In judo, Soumaya Iraoui and Abderrahmane Boushita are the ones to cheer for in the -52kg and -66kg categories, respectively. Oussama Assad will represent Morocco in Greco-Roman wrestling, and two women, Fatima Ezzahra Aboufaras and Oumaima El Bouchti, will compete in taekwondo. While this might not be Morocco’s most promising event,  we are growing into it  and have serious opportunities to make a name for ourselves!

Realistic  hopes in new events 

Among the new Olympic disciplines, we have already mentioned surfing and Ramzi Boukhiam. The young Moroccan surfer aims to ride THE best wave at Teahupo’o and win the gold medal. We believe in him! There’s also breakdancing, or more accurately, breaking, which is making its Olympic debut this year. We eagerly await battles featuring B-Girl Fatima Zahra El Mamouny and B-Boy Bilal Mallakh!

Dark horses  for surprise medals

And then there are those we didn’t necessarily expect but have great chances of surprising us. Among them are cyclists, swimmers, shooters, and fencers. It’s hard to predict, but we’ve picked two standouts. Firstly, there is Noor Slaoui, whose profile we have already highlighted. This talented young equestrian marks Morocco’s first participation in eventing. We will see her on Saturday, July 27th, in Versailles, for the first event, dressage. We are counting on her to leave a mark! 

Our second favorite is Inès Laklalech, a talented 26-year-old golfer we have also featured. Golf has been an Olympic sport since 1900. Highly selective, the competition features only 33 countries, among them two from Africa, and Morocco has secured its third consecutive participation. We have every reason to believe in her! Inès Laklalech will compete in the women’s Olympic tournament starting August 7th. We will be there to admire her swing up close!

So, what does it really mean to fall in love or make someone you desire fall for you? It’s a profound existential question, the editorial team doesn’t claim to know the absolute truth (it doesn’t exist). However, at the very least, oxytocin is not a bystander in this matter. What is it, exactly? It’s a hormone secreted by our brains, primarily when we spend time with loved ones. It is released when we receive compliments, acts of attention and kindness, and affectionate gestures. Oxytocin significantly promotes attachment. So, brain chemistry plays a non-negligible role in matters of the heart. Hence the talk of chemistry between two people.

Is oxytocin the reason for love ?

Secreted by the hypothalamus (a gland located at the base of the brain), oxytocin is produced in all affectionate relationships. Biologically, this hormone, which is also a neurotransmitter, is essential to reproduction. It promotes egg fertilization in women and ejaculation in men. Oxytocin is intrinsically linked to childbirth, the parent-child bond, and father-child relationships.

On a sexual level, tenderness, arousal, and orgasm increase oxytocin production. Thus, the more partners make love, the more they become attached to each other. Oxytocin accompanies the development of romantic feelings and even promotes exclusivity. It’s not just a love potion; it’s a loyalty potion. In fact, if it didn’t exist to counterbalance dopamine (the pleasure hormone), everyone would have sex with anyone. Mother Nature knows what she’s doing !

Oxytocin also promotes overall well-being. It reduces stress and facilitates interpersonal and emotional exchanges. A study published in the journal Nature, conducted by Ernst Fehr’s team at the University of Zurich, showed that this hormone encourages the feeling of trust among humans.

Oxytocin: a mild drug ?

Is love just a matter of oxytocin levels in the blood? No, don’t go play amateur chemists with “Bae.” But having more moments together, whether they are relational or carnal, undoubtedly contributes to feelings of love. Of course, they must be pleasant and positive moments. Beyond endless conversations or passionate sexual encounters, remember to look into each other’s eyes. Smile at each other. Gently touch each other’s hands. Be kind. Believe us; it makes a difference.

However, be cautious. Both oxytocin and dopamine activate the brain’s reward circuit. It can, therefore, become a (mild) drug. Wanting another “hit” doesn’t necessarily mean you see a future with the other person. You know very well that it’s much more complicated than that. But hey, it’s always better than not wanting any at all. Yes, let’s stay positive (the author of this article needs it).

Oxytocin deficiency, empathy deficiency

Moreover, we are not all equal in our ability to produce oxytocin. For example, people who lacked affection in childhood are less able. In childhood, a lack of oxytocin can even cause delays in mental and physical development. This deficiency fosters anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression. In adulthood, an oxytocin deficit can also lead to a lack of empathy.

In 2017, a nasal spray made of oxytocin was specially designed for depressed people. By the way, when Edith Piaf sings “La Vie en Rose,” she is actually describing a massive release of oxytocin. So, it turns out that humans are indeed dependent on chemistry above all else !

Feeling the earth shake, even when living in an area spared from the worst of the damage, can be traumatizing, especially for children who are often woken up by parents who are almost panicking themselves. Whether evacuated or not, in calm or chaos, all children had to abruptly become aware of a new danger. They have discovered that the earth can tremble so strongly that our houses and buildings are not enough to protect us. On the contrary: what typically represents our safe space becomes a threat in this case.

This post-earthquake can manifest at different times, even after several days or weeks. Every child is different, and their reaction will vary depending on their experiences and personality. In some cases, the trauma can reactivate others and even trigger somewhat intense reactions. There is no universal solution to help them calm down. Sometimes, the assistance of a therapist may be necessary if the symptoms persist for several weeks, which can include sleep problems, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, and hypervigilance.

Encourage Them to Talk 

The preferred tool to prevent the shock after the earthquake from turning into lasting trauma is communication. When a child sees an adult get down to their level to listen, they feel validated in their feelings. This makes them more comfortable in expressing the emotions that the event has triggered in them. This release is necessary to dissipate the tension that has built up in the body and is feeding the stress.

To initiate the conversation, open-ended questions should be used (avoid yes-or-no questions that steer the response). “Why” questions can add to stress, as they engage the mind and require thought. “How” questions, on the other hand, encourage description, helping to connect them with the body and emotions. For example, questions like, “How did you feel when you heard me scream?” or “How did you feel when you saw me come to get you in your bed?” are preferable.

For effective communication, you should listen quietly. Comments, even reassurance, can disrupt the child’s flow and seem out of touch with their feelings. Emotions, when they arise, should also be welcomed in silence to allow them to be fully released. Only then should you speak to rephrase what the child said with empathy, still without judgment. Phrases like “You were scared of…” or “You thought that…” or “It’s hard for you to…” can be used.

…but don’t overdo it 

As mentioned at the beginning, the shock after the earthquake won’t manifest in the same way for everyone. If a child doesn’t seem overwhelmed by anxiety, it’s best not to push. The risk is that trying to address it may create trauma where there was none. On this principle, children should also be shielded from anxiety-inducing words and images. Turn off continuous news channels and any other sources of information that are hard to control.

Drawing can be a good way for children who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. However, it’s essential not to comment or judge. Simply observe the process and name it: “You’re pressing hard,” “You’re using a lot of green,” “You’re taking your time to draw this character,” and so on. The goal remains the same: to get down to the child’s level, connect with their feelings, and create a safe space for emotions to emerge.

A child reluctant to talk may find it easier to do so in a play situation. If they are still young, using a stuffed animal or doll can be a playful way (and less intimidating than talking directly to adults) to start the conversation. Children are more likely to talk with their stuffed animal, especially if you animate it like a puppet with a funny voice.

Regain Control

To feel reassured, children need to be informed. You can suggest researching together how an earthquake occurs and what to do in case of an earthquake, while emphasizing that such events are exceedingly rare.

Restoring a child’s confidence also involves fostering a sense of personal power in all daily activities. This includes tasks unrelated to the shock after the earthquake. For example, involve your children in daily chores and, if appropriate for their age, let them do tasks on their own. This might include preparing breakfast, grocery shopping alone while you keep a close eye, being responsible for feeding the cat, or filling and operating the washing machine, among other things. As much as possible, encourage them to make decisions (again, appropriate for their age and abilities).

It’s also a time to spend quality time with our children —  when we pull our eyes away from our phones and are fully present, even if it’s only for 20 minutes. By filling their emotional reservoir, we nurture their sense of inner security. During this time, introduce stress-reduction tools. There are various resources for regulating the nervous system, including deep breathing and heart coherence, yoga, meditation, massages, and walks in nature.

As adults, we are here to listen, guide, and, most importantly, set an example. If we are affected ourselves, verbalizing our feelings helps model this expression for the child. However, it’s important to remain in a reassuring posture for the child to avoid emotional contagion. If a parent feels overwhelmed by anxiety, passing the task to another adult may be necessary. Remember the instructions on an airplane: in the event of cabin depressurization, the adult must first put on their own oxygen mask before putting one on the child. This applies to everyday life: to take care of the stress in younger children, we first need to take care of our own.
