Casablanca: Villa Carl Ficke, a memory capsule of the city

Casablanca has a new gem for history lovers. Opened in late February 2025, the Casablanca Memory Museum traces the city’s history from the early days of Anfa to the Art Deco era and even its football culture. Housed in Villa Carl Ficke—a stunning architectural jewel reminiscent of an Italian palace built in 1913—the museum offers a deep dive into the city’s past. The villa has changed hands over the years, belonging to Germany, then France, and finally Morocco, and now hosts historical documents and works from the Casablanca School of the 1960s and 70s. The restoration of the once-abandoned villa and its gardens was led by Moroccan architect and anthropologist Salima Naji, who also introduced the country’s first “material library,” showcasing the secrets of heritage conservation.

During Ramadan 2025, entry to the Casablanca Memory Museum is free.

Rabat: The Chellah site, a journey through time

Reopened in 2024, the Chellah is a must-see historical site in Morocco’s museum capital. Spanning over 7,000 square meters, it offers a glimpse into 2,000 years of history, from the Roman ruins of Sala Colonia to the medieval Merinid necropolis. Visitors can wander through the remains of the Khalwa Mosque’s grand arcades and the fortress walls, punctuated by 23 watchtowers, which enclose a vast garden designed in the 20th century by architect Maurice Tranchant de Lunel. Towering above the ruins, white storks have made this historic landmark their home. For budding archaeologists, the Chellah remains an active excavation site, where new discoveries continue to be unearthed. 

One of the biggest additions since its reopening is its culinary offerings. The Patio restaurant now occupies the former palace foundouk, while the Ciconia café provides breathtaking views of the gardens, with a menu curated by Chef Hicham Aouad. Throughout the year, the Chellah hosts cultural events such as the Jazz au Chellah festival and Mawazine.

For Ramadan 2025, the Chellah is one of the museums in Morocco featuring a special program, “Celestial Nights,” with pottery workshops, nighttime photography sessions, and a specially crafted  ftour menu.

Marrakech: A world of beauty at the Museum of Adornment Arts

One of the most visually striking museums in Morocco, the Museum of Adornment Arts, opened in winter 2023, is a true masterpiece. Designed by renowned Franco-Lebanese architects Michel Charrière and Joseph Achkar, the museum is housed within a collection of riads in the Kasbah district, near the Badii Palace and Saadian Tombs. Centered around an octagonal courtyard that floods the space with light, it showcases the remarkable collection of Swiss art lovers Marlène and Paolo Gallone.

Over 40 years, the couple amassed thousands of pieces, 3,000 of which are displayed at the museum. The three levels, with exposed brick walls and polished concrete floors, are bathed in dim light, making the adornments, ornaments, and ceremonial garments stand out. Each item was chosen for its “emotional power” and originates from Africa, Central Europe, and Asia.

The top floor houses one of Morocco’s most extensive Berber jewelry collections, presented on a striking background—a river of minerals displayed under glass, symbolizing the natural inspiration behind these rare pieces.

The museum’s rooftop terrace, designed by Panpriape, a landscape design firm specializing in ecological gardens, features Shams, a café-restaurant blending Levantine and Mediterranean cuisine, with an unrivaled view of the Atlas Mountains and the Koutoubia Mosque.

Tangier: Donabo Botanical Gardens, a seaside sanctuary

The Donabo Gardens, a public botanical park founded by private owners, opened in 2022 as a heartfelt family tribute. For co-founder Lalla Malika El Alaoui, the space is filled with memories of her late father. Years later, she transformed the family land into an open garden for all to create new memories together.

With the help of Paul Belvoir, a British artist and decorator who fell in love with Tangier, they designed this exceptional space overlooking the sea. Nestled along the Cap Spartel road, within the Rmilat forest, Donabo Gardens is dedicated to organic cultivation. Flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs, trees, and shrubs make it a sensory museum of local and international flora.

The Mint Labyrinth leads to the Japanese Garden, complete with a pond and a small stone bridge, before opening onto the rose garden and vegetable patch. The latter supplies the Donabo Gardens café-restaurant, which serves seasonal dishes, as well as the shop, where visitors can find artisanal preserves and jams. This one-of-a-kind museum also hosts cooking classes, Andalusian music concerts, and lectures. A particular highlight is the annual Tomato and Chili Festival in summer, which celebrates these plants in all their uses. .

Fes: Al Batha Museum, a palace of dreams

A beloved landmark for both locals and tourists, the Al Batha Museum is one of Morocco’s recently reopened cultural treasures, welcoming visitors again in February 2025 after years of restoration. Once a royal palace of the Alaouite dynasty, this stunning Hispano-Moorish residence—modeled after the grand Andalusian palaces—has served many purposes since its construction under Sultan Hassan I. It was the childhood home of Sultan Moulay AbdelAziz, who later experimented with early photography here. During the French Protectorate, it became an ethnographic museum in 1915 before being classified as a national monument. Today, thanks to Morocco’s National Foundation of Museums, it has been transformed into the Museum of Islamic Arts, featuring an extraordinary collection.

Fes is renowned as the capital of traditional craftsmanship, and the Al Batha Museum pays homage to this heritage. Out of the 7,000 artifacts it holds, 700 masterpieces are on display, ranging from astrolabes to beautifully calligraphed manuscripts. One of the highlights is the rare “Adouate Al Andalous” minbar, one of the few preserved examples of its kind in the world. But the showstopper is undoubtedly the room dedicated to Moroccan ceramics, showcasing exquisite examples of the famous “Fes blue” pottery.

Adding to its charm, this vast palace is surrounded by a magnificent garden, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Paved with intricate zellige mosaics, the pathways lead to a towering, century-old green oak tree, with several shaded resting spots by the fountains. In springtime, jacarandas and mimosas bloom alongside palm trees, orange groves, and aromatic plants, creating an oasis of tranquility.

For nearly two centuries, Christofle has revolutionized silversmithing while embodying the French art of living. In Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD), nestled within the Louvre Palace, is dedicating an exceptional exhibition to this prestigious craftsmanship, aptly titled “Christofle, A Brilliant History.”

Running until April 20, 2025, this major retrospective traces Christofle’s evolution from its founding in 1830 to the present day. Featuring over 600 pieces of silverware, paintings, drawings, and posters sourced from the Bouilhet-Christofle Conservatory and prestigious national collections, the exhibition unveils how founders Charles Christofle and Henri Bouilhet transformed silver into a true art form.

Through technical innovations, artistic collaborations, and heritage masterpieces, this immersive journey highlights a house of ingenuity that has, over the decades, elevated the art of dining while quite literally placing art on the table. Ultimately, it is a magnificent tribute from MAD, whose close ties with Christofle date back to the late 19th century.

The house of legendary tables

The exhibition unfolds across several themed spaces, each illustrating a facet of Christofle’s savoir-faire. It begins with an intimate look into the brand’s workshops, now based in Normandy and known for their unparalleled craftsmanship. Visitors are then transported into a faithfully recreated 19th-century Christofle boutique, immersing them in an era where exceptional artistry met the tastes of the time, heralding the rise of Art Nouveau and a fascination with Japanese art  and naturalism.

Among the iconic creations from this period is the “Fish-Shaped Vase,” designed by Émile Reiber, head of Christofle’s design and composition studio from 1865 to 1878. Inspired by Edo-period Japanese art (1603-1868), this piece has been reissued in silver-plated metal, preserving its distinctive aesthetic and intricate details. Staying true to its Japanese and naturalist influences, Christofle has also reissued its iconic soliflores: the onion vase, the celery vase, and the carrot bunch vase.

Another section celebrates the house’s technical prowess, particularly electrochemical silver plating—a revolutionary process patented by Charles Christofle that democratized luxury silverware. As visitors move through the exhibition, they can admire cutlery sets, tea services, and tableware that have graced the world’s most prestigious tables: La Tour d’Argent, the Normandie ocean liner, and the Orient Express train. The journey also showcases contemporary pieces designed for World’s Fairs.

The Epic “Surtout” 

To honor the tradition of World’s Fairs, the exceptionally talented silversmith and designer Jean-Pierre Cottet-Dubreuil has created a one-of-a-kind masterpiece: the “Surtout Ode to Origins.” Undoubtedly the exhibition’s showstopper, this spectacular work captivates with its modernity and scale. Crafted from solid silver, rock crystal, and mirrors, it evokes the genesis of the world through geological forms inspired by pyrite. Measuring four meters in length and requiring over a thousand hours of meticulous craftsmanship, this piece embodies Christofle’s excellence and audacity.

A fascinating historical anecdote: when Napoleon III came to power in 1852, he sought to revive courtly life at the Tuileries Palace to solidify his prestige and legitimacy. His strategy? Lavish banquets. He commissioned Christofle to create a monumental 4,000-piece service, including an elaborate Surtout—a decorative centerpiece featuring sculptures, spice boxes, candelabras, vases, and more.

Napoleon III was deeply involved in the Surtout’s creation, frequently visiting Christofle’s workshops. Delivered in 1856, the masterpiece met a tragic fate in 1871 when the Communards set fire to the Tuileries. Despite this loss, Christofle’s destiny was sealed: in the following years, the Elysée Palace, ministries, embassies, and European courts all acquired their own Christofle sets. A tradition that endures to this day.

The art of reinvention

Boldness has always been a hallmark of Christofle. To reinvent itself, the house embraced a radical transformation in the 1920s, embracing the sleek lines and geometric motifs of Art Deco. This movement inspired remarkable designs, including tableware sets imagined by the visionary designer Luc Lanel.

Christofle also distinguished itself through collaborations with renowned designers. Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti brought an avant-garde vision to its silverware in the 1950s. Later, luminaries like Andrée Putman and Martin Szekely continued this legacy, infusing Christofle’s collections with striking, minimalist designs.

Continuing this spirit of innovation, Christofle’s in-house studio has created a new piece for the exhibition: the “Affinités” water pitcher. A modern reinterpretation of the ancient amphora, it seamlessly blends steel and silver. For those wishing to take a piece of Christofle home, a selection of exclusive items is available at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs boutique, including the “Miel d’Argent” candle and the “Duel de Thé” card game, illustrated by hand.

Beyond the walls 

Art Explora Festival is a cultural odyssey in the Mediterranean initiated by the Art Explora Foundation, in partnership with the European Union. Its journey, which began in spring 2024, will end in 2026. This traveling festival, designed as a program of exchanges and meetings between the shores of the Mediterranean, revolves around several elements. The first floating museum in the world, a catamaran, will make stops in 15 Mediterranean countries, including Morocco. During each stopover, exhibition pavilions and onshore programming will be offered to the public.

In collaboration with the Louvre Museum, the immersive exhibitions on board invite visitors to question the role and representation of women in the Mediterranean region. In parallel, a sound journey is offered to visitors, who are invited to relax on deckchairs with headphones on.

The Art Explora Foundation aims to bridge the cultural gap while democratizing art in all its forms. In Morocco, this is already partly successful, as the first stop in Tangier (until September 29) is a hit. The next stop is scheduled for Rabat in October.

Botanical immersion

Abderrahim Yamou hardly needs an introduction. A biologist, sociologist, and art historian, he is a painter of nature and the biological world.  His work explores both material and abstraction, figuration and the pictorial. At each of his exhibitions, Yamou invites the spectator into a kind of introspection. He constantly questions presence and absence, the cycles of life, death, and rebirth.

For his new exhibition at Atelier 21, he explores the theme “Sensitive Praise of Humus,” where he delves into the origins of life in the plant world. Minerals, humus, and earth intertwine, meet, and fuse to give rise to tiny manifestations of blossoming. With over twenty paintings, oils on canvas or wood, this solo show is one of the must-see exhibitions of 2024.

Reminiscence

Bouchra Boudoua is undoubtedly one of those contemporary Moroccan artists who have managed to stand out internationally, thanks to her talent and unique approach. We’ve introduced her before. Known for her pottery, she returns this fall in a completely different medium: painting. Starting October 3, she will present “I Remember a Land” at Loft Art Gallery in Casablanca.

For this new exhibition, the artist delves into her childhood memories, reinterpreting the richness of Moroccan landscapes, both mountainous and rural, that she observed as a little girl. Collecting fragments of stories, iconic motifs, and ancestral symbols, she offers a decidedly graphic interpretation.

Proud of her Berber origins, Bouchra Boudoua also pays tribute to Amazigh culture. Her work exudes a balanced interplay of shapes, lines, and colors, both simple and sophisticated. The works on display, mixed media paintings on wood, take us from Dar Skoura to the edges of the Souss river.

Female portraits

If you haven’t been yet, and you’re passing through the Strait city, a visit to the Foundation for Photography is a must. Perched on the heights of Tangier, the venue hosts a truly unique exhibition for a few more weeks. “Role Play” is a photo exhibition featuring the works of seven female artists. Though these are self-portraits, they are far from the usual introspections typical of this genre. In the photographs, the women depicted take on roles, transform themselves, and play with the camera.

You’ll discover, for example, the carefully staged portraits by the Countess of Castiglione. This former spy, famous for being Napoleon III’s mistress, is also considered a genius artist. The black-and-white photographs of Francesca Woodman, who died at 22 but left behind a body of work with over 800 mysterious and surreal prints. Works by contemporary Moroccan artists like Amina Benbouchta question the condition of women in society. The photographs of Fatima Mazmouz, Fatima Zohra Serri, and Safaa Marzih focus more on the essence of the female role within the Moroccan cultural context.

In short, “Role Play” is one of those 2024 exhibitions that should not be missed.

Urban fragments

Based in Marrakech since 2009, the Montresso Foundation aims to support and promote the diversity of artistic expression. As a residence for artists, it hosts painter ROSH as part of the 2024 exhibitions. Of Hispanic origin, this former graffiti artist turned to new practices during the pandemic. Used to working outdoors on the scale of a city, he found himself confined, forced to create differently.

Today, he presents the exhibition “Se de un lugar”: a journey through Seville, Tenerife, and Marrakech from which the artist returns even more in love with humanity. He captures the graphic essence of the city, fragments it, and reinterprets it to design a new urban landscape. His work consists of compositions rhythmically marked by bold colors and lines. ROSH creates new urban identities that inspire travel, allowing free reign to daydreams and even the utopia of a world without borders. A little detour to the Jardin Rouge of the Montresso Foundation is essential!

Traditions of elegance

In the heart of Marrakech, in a 17th-century riad, the Museum of Moroccan Elegance is opening. A venue entirely dedicated to the cultural and sartorial  history of our country. The museum showcases the work of artist and researcher-documentalist Habiba Hantout (1936-2024). More than 200 hand-crafted miniature female and male dolls trace the evolution of Moroccan clothing over 13 centuries. She dedicated her entire life to this collection, spending nearly 40 years conducting meticulous research, countless hours of skilled sewing, and maintaining an unyielding passion.

Spread over two levels, the museum features several rooms. One is dedicated to city brides, two others focus on Berbers and the Sahara. The collections take us from the north to the south of the Kingdom, highlighting the particularities of each province or region. A place devoted to Moroccan history told through the haïk, the mendil, the selham, the caftans of Benchrif Khrib, and the jellabas. It’s must-visit during your next trip to the ochre city.

Personal Invitation

The African Arty gallery offers a particularly unusual exhibition for the start of the season. “Artistic Journeys” features artist Mostafa Maftah, who welcomes visitors as if he were at home in his studio. “Rosebud”

That’s the title of Najia Mehadji’s latest exhibition at Atelier 21. The visual artist, whose works grace the collections of the Arab World Institute, the Amman Museum of Fine Arts, and the Mohammed VI Museum, brings the rose back into the limelight. In this new series, the artist metamorphoses it to give it even more fullness,  using a large masking brush. On monochrome canvases, she manages to implement her unmistakable strokes,  this time expressing compassion for  human tragedy. In the current context, “Rosebud” is meant by the artist to be a “symbol of offering, love, beauty, ephemerality, in contrast to death.” It’s definitely one of the exhibitions of 2024 not to be missed!

“Life Lines”

For its first exhibition dedicated to photography, the Jaal Riad Resort in Marrakech has chosen Alan Keohane. An English photographer based in Marrakech since 1993, he will exhibit a series of portraits. The artist is well known in the world of hospitality in Morocco. Indeed, he has indeed collaborated with La Mamounia, the Michlifen Resort, the Fairmont Royal Palm, and the Four Seasons. Through his lens, he sought to sublimate the interiors and exteriors of these establishments, but he also traveled extensively in the kingdom which he particularly cherishes. For this exhibition, Alan Keohane has selected portraits, full of emotion, of individuals encountered during his travels. The result is striking; it tells the story of lives that are so very different, and yet so very similar. . The portraits immortalize simple yet profound emotions, with a sharp eye for detail. The light, contrasts, and the subjects themselves reveal the richness of Morocco!

“Le Temps d’un instant”

 The new exhibition at Eden Art Gallery immerses us in the worlds of three women with different backgrounds and life journeys.  Their common thread? Perhaps the poetic aspect with which they deliver their visions of nature.

Dalida Benseffaj is a multidisciplinary artist, native to Tetouan. Her painting focuses mainly on the human element. She is drawn to her interactions with nature in particular. As a specialist in documentary cinema, she seeks to create an invisible connection between her works and those who view them.

Rita Benjelloun offers a selection of canvases where color serves as the guiding thread. They “merge and blend into each other” to make us feel nature, the main theme of the artist’s work. Both gentle and powerful, her works tell the story of a moment to which everyone can relate. 

Esther Martinez Recuero is a visual artist and painter born in Madrid. Although she has used various means of expression throughout her career (music, new technologies, poetry), she has chosen to present a series of paintings for the 2024 exhibitions. Blossoming and the marine world are themes that interest her and lead her to deliver nuanced impressions.  Lines, knots, or bonds are made and undone according to the emotions she seeks to capture.

 “Le Silence des Mots”

 Painter Hamid Douieb exhibits his latest works at Myriem Himmich Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Casablanca. For this solo show, this native of Casablanca, both a painter and an engineer, invites us to discover the subtlety of the moment when words fail and hands express themselves. His representational  painting, supported by details bordering on hyperrealism, transports us into a unique visual universe. Hands and gestures intertwine and speak a kind of  sign language, undoubtedly much more powerful than words.  “Through Earth, Sea & Space” & “Material Muses”

 The Loft Art Gallery in Marrakech welcomes, starting from May 10th, two artists: Amina Rezki and Kwaku Yaro. The former hails from Tangier and currently resides and works in Brussels. With her latest series of works, she invites us into her boundless and wild imagination, a journey filled with portraits that pay homage to the realms of earth, sea, and space. Figures strike poses, beckoning the viewer, while numerous intriguing details compose the scenery.

 The latter, Kwaku Yaro, is a young self-taught Ghanaian artist living in Accra. He presents “Material Muses,” a collection also consisting of portraits. What sets him apart is his reuse of various materials. He assembles, juxtaposes, and glues pieces of mats, plastic bags, or jute canvases to create works whose dimension transcends that of a simple portrait. Both Amina Rezki and Kwaku Yaro offer dedicated  work that undoubtedly constitutes a must-see among the 2024 exhibitions!

“Feux”

Under the theme of one of the four elements, fire, visual artist Yacout Hamdouch presents her works at Galerie 38 in Marrakech. Using acrylic on canvas or wood, the Moroccan painter invites us to discover her graphic interpretation of flame, of fire. She has drawn from the very history of its discovery all the brilliance and uniqueness that characterize it. Each fire is unique, captivating. It radiates for the artist its own energy and a palette of colors that she explores and leverages with great modernity and purity. The result unquestionably nourishes our reflection on the symbolism of fire. Destruction, renewal, wealth, fertility are words inspired by Yacout Hamdouch’s work. “Feux” is one of those exhibitions of 2024 that will be remembered!

“Seeds & Vegetal”

A traveling  exhibition, organized in a partnership by Art First, Galerie Dar D’Art, and the American Arts Center for Casablanca, “Seeds & Vegetal” recounts the botanical wanderings of Lamia Miriam Skiredj. After being presented at the end of 2023 in Tangier, the artist’s work will now be showcased in the economic capital. A true immersion into a world imagined by the painter, the exhibition questions the relationship between man and nature. It is an initiatory journey into the universe of this visual artist who seeks to capture the viewer’s attention by immersing them in a fusion of organic forms, colors with eloquent contrasts, and infinitely small details. This exhibition  seeks to reconnect us with the very essence of our being, one that is deeply respectful of  nature.

 In 2023, Morocco submitted a request for the induction  of the Moroccan caftan onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. While awaiting review of the application, which will take place in 2025, the Moroccan caftan is on display in Casablanca. From April 3 to 12, DS Automobiles presents the unprecedented and immersive exhibition “Au fil du caftan: heritage & craftsmanship,” at the DS Gallery. Why would a French luxury automobile manufacturer be interested in the Moroccan caftan? Simply because DS Automobiles excels in syncretism, combining advanced technology with ancestral craftsmanship. In addition, it has also been the official partner of Paris Fashion Week since 2019. So, at a time when the Moroccan caftan, the result of a millennia-old history and heritage, is exported worldwide, this merger makes perfect sense.

 Furthermore, the artistic direction and curation of this exhibition were conceived and designed by Sofia Benbrahim, founder of the digital agency Serafina Concept and publisher of Shoelifer — and the whole team of your favorite lifestyle magazine worked day and night to prepare for this event! As a reminder, Sofia Benbrahim is no stranger to this kind of endeavor. From 2015 to 2019, she was  entrusted with curating the exhibition of traditional Moroccan couture at the Moroccan Week in Abu Dhabi over 4 successive editions. So, you can see why it’s really worth taking  a look at the DS Gallery.

An exhibition bursting with color 

If we can’t convince you on an emotional level, what about on a more substantial one?  The exhibition “Au fil du caftan: heritage & craftsmanship” is objectively a must-visit if you want to become an expert on the  Moroccan caftan which, is (do we really need to remind you?) an essential piece of the female wardrobe in the kingdom. The educational and colorful exhibition brings together for the first time private collections of ancient, vintage, and modern Moroccan caftans, as well as current collections designed by our greatest Moroccan designers.

You will discover pieces by Tamy Tazi, Zhor Sebti for Fadéla Couture, Zbida Alami, Amina Benmoussa, Zineb Joundy, Lamia Lakhsassi, Frédérique Birkemeyer, Albert Oiknine, Houda Serbouti, Myriam Bouafi, Zineb Lyoubi Idrissi, Loubna Guessous, Amina Tmimi, Salima Chaieb, and Sara Chraïbi. So, it is a true immersion into the universe of a transgenerational garment, often passed down from mothers to daughters, which brings people together and strengthens their bonds.

 The story of a millennium-old saga 

Throughout the exhibition, the millennium-old saga of the caftan unfolds. First of all, its origins are still subject to historical debates. The caftan is “inherited from the splendors of the Ottoman Empire for some, a reinterpretation of the flowing robes of the Roman era, or reminiscent of the  traditional haik for others.” Above all, it was once a garment of choice for men, a symbol of grandeur reserved for nobility. “From Baghdad to Cordoba, from Damascus to Istanbul, the caftan has been enriched , over time, by various influences to become the sartorial icon of the kingdom in the 11th and 12th centuries. But it was only 200 years later that it would make a remarkable entrance into women’s wardrobes to never leave again,” state the explanatory texts written for the exhibition.

In the 19th century, with the economic boom in Morocco, “the caftan flirted for the first time with Lyon brocades and silks imported from China.” The Moroccan caftan then became the preferred medium for ntaâ embroideries in gold thread from Fes, multicolored floral motifs from Tetouan, or geometric designs in silk thread from Rabat —  alll achieved through the extraordinary behind-the-scenes work of the maâlems. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Western women’s liberation gradually reshaped the shape and style of the Moroccan caftan. The T-cut gradually gave way to a multitude of variations: trains, kimono sleeves, and flared shapes — evolutions brilliantly embodied by the iconic creations of Zhor Sebti for Fadila Couture, Zina Guessous, and Tamy Tazi.

The more things change the more they stay the same          MOROCCAN CAFTAN

With the exhilarating 1980s , the Moroccan caftan adopted tailored waists, shoulder pads, and new fabrics like guipure (lace). It was even worn over sheath dresses and other silk jerseys. In the 1990s, the rise of Moroccan fashion and the broadcasting of fashion shows on television contributed to the emergence of new designers with boundless imagination. This led to an era of uninhibited  Moroccan caftans (layering of skirts, extra-wide belts, corsets, etc.) in the 2000s. This then led to  the refined sleeves and an even more pronounced waist, all enhanced with sequins, beads, or sun pleats in the 2010s.

 Despite this fascinating evolution, the Moroccan caftan never denies its traditional fundamentals (T-cut, buttons, and cinched waist) —  a sign of true kinship and continuity. For instance, when gathering collections for this exhibition, three designers each brought a caftan in carmine red velvet. One dated from the early 20th century, another from the 1920s, and the last from the present era.

Ending With a Joyful Suspension and Concise Overview           MOROCCAN CAFTAN

The highlight of the exhibition is none other than the suspension of caftans, a discursive visual artwork where ancient and contemporary ultra-colorful caftans come together. . The suspension is conceived as a celebration, a joyful and timeless festivity, where creative and experimental innovation meets heritage and unity. We have to admit, it’s quite moving!

Instructive  and inclusive, the exhibition also showcases the process of designing the Moroccan caftan. “From an inspiration board to the first pencil stroke, from a pattern to embroidery tests, the designer refines and communicates his creative vision. Supported by his cutters, tailors, pattern makers, embroiderers, maâlems, workshop managers… it’s a whole invisible world, a true driving force, that is active behind the scenes of the caftan.” The author of these lines (who, as you know, loves to flaunt her knowledge in public) particularly enjoyed “Le petit précis de la couture traditionnelle marocaine” (A Brief Overview of Traditional Moroccan Couture) also presented within the exhibition. Her favorite word? Karmoussa, which refers to the XL akad in braided silk thread, named so because of its resemblance to a fig. In short, as you can see, this exhibition on the Moroccan caftan is a must-see — and as soon as possible! 

 “AU FIL DU CAFTAN – HERITAGE & CRAFTSMANSHIP”

While Dakhla has become an essential destination in the Moroccan deep south, our team has also fallen for the charm of Ouarzazate. Regarded as the gateway to the Sahara, its name, meaning “the city without noise” in Amazigh, it is a true wonder for the eyes and the soul. Located 193 kilometers from Marrakech, south of the High Atlas, the city and its surroundings perfectly embody the idea of a “journey to the end of the world”. The Most Chic: Dar Ahlam in Skoura           

The name of this establishment says it all. Dar Ahlam, the “House of Dreams,” is a high-end hotel nestled at the heart of a traditional Kasbah in the Skoura palm grove, 45 minutes east of Ouarzazate. The Most Unique: Umnya Desert Camp on the Brink of the Sahara

If “Umnya” means “wish” in Arabic, it’s because this luxury camp is set in the heart of the Erg Chegaga, a globally recognized spot for stargazing and – hold your breath – meteor showers every October and November. Granted, this spot is a little over 5 hours away from Ouarzazate, but it’s well worth the journey!

The Most Natural: Hara Oasis in Agdz                          Ouarzazate

In the Draa Valley, 70 km from Ouarzazate, this eco-lodge with a natural spirit and a laid-back ambiance is nestled in the “world’s largest palm grove.” It is a hidden oasis that reveals itself by the riverside and the ruins of the ghost town of El Hara. Looking for a good dose of culture? Look no further; it’s happening in Marrakech. From February 9 to 12, the 1-54 fair makes a stop in the Red City. This art fair dedicated to contemporary African art was founded just 10 years ago by Touria El Glaoui (the daughter of the painter El Glaoui himself). Organized every year in London and New York, it returns to Marrakech for its 4th edition. If you think this kind of event is not for you, think again! Just take a look at the diverse variety of events to change your mind.
The fair itself brings together twenty galleries at the Mamounia Palace (eight of which are based on the African continent). But the festivities don’t stop there. From Dar Moulay Ali to Sidi Ghanem, through the Medina and the many Marrakech galleries, African art is displayed all over the city. Exhibitions, meetings, performances… here is our (incomplete) selection of events not to be missed.

The Spiritual Body and the Carnal Spirit (“Le corps spirituel et l’esprit charnel”)

At the initiative of Amina Benbouchta, twelve Moroccan artists have been invited to present a piece in dialogue with their own work. What is the relationship between art and sacredness? And what place does the sacred hold in our earthly life? Find the answers through the works of artists like Fatime Zahra Morjani, Ilias Selfati, Youness Atbane, Déborah Benzaquen, and Sanae Arraqas, among others. Located at the El Badii Palace, this collective exhibition promises to be one of the most enriching at 1-54 Marrakech.

Marrakech African Book Festival (FLAM : Festival du Livre Africain de Marrakech)

Artist and writer Mahi Binebine takes the opportunity of the 1-54 Marrakech fair to organize the very first Marrakech African Book Festival. Led by Fatimata Wane Sagna, Hanane Essaydi, and Younès Ajarraï, it will take place in the Red City from February 9 to 12. A literary event implies discussions. No less than forty authors (from about fifteen nationalities) will meet the public. Debates, roundtables, readings, book signings… the program looks so extensive that you’d have to make a copy of yourself to do everything.

“The Promise of the Imprint” Exhibition at Malhoun (“La promesse de l’empreinte”)

Brand new, the Malhoun space will open its doors on February 9, alongside the start of 1-54 Marrakech. Located in the heart of Guéliz, this new art gallery includes an artistic residency program, an experimentation laboratory, and a curatorial platform. The idea is to support and accompany emerging Moroccan artists who create a dialogue with established artists from Africa and beyond. On the occasion of its very first event, the public will be able to discover the work of numerous artists such as Eric van Hove, Sammy Baloji, Nassim Azarzar, Younes Rahmoun, Hicham Benohoud, M’Barek Bouhchichi, and Khadija El Abyad.

Night of the Galleries (“La Nuit des galeries”)

Why settle for one exhibition when you can see several in one evening? As part of Night of the Galleries on Thursday, February 9, you can discover many exhibitions “by night”. On the program? A solo show by Yasmina Alaoui at the Comptoir des Mines, and the opening of the exhibition “La saveur des couleurs” at Galerie 38. And if you missed “Gâta Bantu” by Yvanovicth Mbaya at the CDA Gallery in Casablanca, you can catch it at L’Blassa artspace.

Mera o Ness at Dada

The Dada team, known for organizing the most underground exhibitions (and parties) at 1-54 Marrakech, has struck again. This year, they have invited Karim Chatter, a.k.a. Style Beldi (the Moroccan influencer we all love), to exhibit his work on the walls of this huge space located in the heart of Jema El Fna. Through his photographs, the young Casablancan pays tribute to Moroccan women, mothers, “dadas,” and protective figures who populate his life.

Have you always dreamed of making a stopover on the Silk Road? That’s precisely where the 2023 exhibition at the Arab World Institute (IMA), “On the Roads of Samarkand: Wonders of Silk and Gold,” takes us. Head to Uzbekistan to discover its ancestral textile and goldsmith practices, promoted by Emir Shah Murad in the 19th century. The exceptional exhibition provides a unique dive into the heart of Uzbek heritage and its treasures. It sheds light on the customs of this lesser-known region, despite being located at the confluence of many civilizations. A must-visit during your next escapade to Paris.

Bukhara and Court Embroidery                                                        2023 exhibition

In the 16th century, in what is now Uzbekistan, three khanates (kingdoms led by khans) were formed and vied for power: Bukhara, Khiva, and Kokand. Among them, the Khanate of Bukhara encompassed the cities of Bukhara and Samarkand. These two cities were particularly prosperous due to their production of cotton and silk. As essential stops on the Silk Road, they developed flourishing craftsmanship in textile art over the centuries. These ancestral skills experienced significant growth in the 19th century under the impetus of Emir Shah Murad. Unable to claim the title of khan and wanting to centralize his power, he founded the Emirate of Bukhara in 1785. To establish his authority, he came up with the idea of creating embroidery workshops in the city of Bukhara, making this technique an official art of the court. These masterpieces can be discovered in this 2023 exhibition, for which Yaffa Assouline (Editor and Artistic Director of Assouline Editions) serves as the general curator, assisted by Philippe Castro, Chief of Staff to Jack Lang.

Immerse yourself in a Land of Wonders  

In partnership with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Foundation, the IMA unveils several hundred unique pieces to the international public for the first time. Originating from Uzbek craftsmanship in the 19th century, some of these items required months or even years of production. For example, for clothing, there are  chapans (a long, open coat), caps embroidered with gold and silver, and talismanic robes. There are also equestrian accessories for men, and precious jewelry for women. And we cannot  forget the intricately embroidered suzanis (large embroidered hangings) and luxurious carpets that adorn the stunning  interiors. The exhibition takes us through minimalistic staging and a fluid itinerary, through the lesser-known masterpieces of the Bukhara court. It also introduces us to the customs and traditions of the time. For example, jewelry served as indicators of a woman’s age and social and marital status. Suzanis, given at weddings and passed down from parents to children, were a token of a happy union. They are designed according to the aesthetic styles of two different schools. The Samarkand school is characterized by astral and hypnotic motifs, while the Bukhara school favors floral and plant compositions reminiscent of beautiful gardens. It is a journey that leads the visitor from surprise to surprise, in a continuous state of wonderment as they encounter these treasures of meticulous craftsmanship.

The Art of Chapan: Luxury Craftsmanship

The centerpiece of this 2023 exhibition is none other than the chapan, presented here in all its forms. This garment, worn like a coat by layering it as desired (up to 7 layers), was part of the men’s wardrobe until the early 20th century. The exceptional chapans presented at the IMA are handmade, mostly in silk velvet and sewn with gold and silver threads. They reveal compositions with colorful motifs, characteristic of different embroidery styles (darkham, buttador, daukhor). The height of refinement, they were once offered to distinguished guests as diplomatic gifts. These traditional outfits might remind us ofMoroccan caftans. We won’t reveal more; we prefer to let you discover these precious carpets, jewelry, accessories, and other unprecedented oriental paintings for yourselves.

Magic tricks, games of chance, psycho-olfactory tests, fragrance bars, dance performances, works of art , and archival images, and more.. No, no, this is not a new carnival  or a trendy Christmas market that has recently opened in the capital; it is actually the exhibition “Le Grand Numéro de Chanel”, which can be discovered at the Grand Palais Éphémère until January 9th. We went for a (grand) tour and tell you why you might regret missing it.

 The beginnings of Chanel perfumery

You probably know some snippets of the  history of the house of Chanel. But what about  its perfumes? A little knowledge never hurts.  It was in 1921 that Mademoiselle Chanel commissioned Ernest Beaux to create a perfume “artificiel comme une robe”, or contrived like a dress.. From his research was born the iconic Chanel No. 5: a perfume with notes of May rose, Grasse jasmine, lily of the valley, and ylang-ylang. Following this fruitful collaboration, Coco Chanel entrusted Monsieur Beaux with founding the Chanel Perfume Laboratory. Today, No. 5 is one of the most well-known (and sold) perfumes in the world, as it is estimated that a bottle is bought… every 30 seconds. In the exhibition “Le Grand Numéro de Chanel”, the visitor is invited to relive the historic moment of the creation of Chanel No. 5. Thanks to virtual reality, the visitor slips into the skin of the famous nose to whom Gabrielle Chanel commissioned her precious elixir — an experience that should appeal to all those who have ever dreamed of traveling back in time.

An immersive dive into the heart of the perfumery’s  flagship fragrances

Years go by and with them the olfactory successes accumulate for the house of Chanel. After No. 5, it was time for Bleu de Chanel, Coco Mademoiselle, or Chance to take the lead in sales. The exhibition invites us to enter the universe of each of these best-sellers, through a scenography with a wow effect and playful animations. In the rooms dedicated to the perfume Chance, for example, you can get your makeup done by makeup artists before going to try your luck at the roulette wheel and  wining beauty goodies ( even perfume!). In the spaces for Bleu de Chanel, you stroll among models of city nightlife  embellished with keypads  on which you can play music. In the world of Coco Mademoiselle, you walk through a long terracotta-colored corridor adorned with shining  chandeliers, before finding yourself on a giant chessboard. You can then make phone calls on retro handsets and hear “Mademoiselle” whispering beauty  quotes to you. Each perfume has its enchanted atmosphere.

A real journey for the senses

Beyond the best-sellers, the brand also develops more exclusive and equally captivating fragrances. To discover them, head to “La Galerie des Caractères”. In this succession of dark rooms, we discover Chanel’s Les Exclusifs collection. Boy, La Pausa, 1957, Bois des Îles, and more, the bottles are presented in showcases and the visitor can smell them through devices provided for this purpose. Here, an “olfactory psychologist” makes us take a test to find out which fragrance suits us best. A little further on, at the “bar”, “bartenders” talk to us about the different elixirs as if we were about to sip them like a cocktail. Each new corner of the exhibition offers the visitor renewed visual and olfactory pleasure. We won’t say more; we wouldn’t want to spoil (all) the surprises of this decidedly festive experience that will delight both the youngest and the young at heart!
