Not dying. That’s the premise of the documentary, Don’t Die, on Netflix. And it’s the credo of Bryan Johnson, a former tech entrepreneur who has become the ultimate guinea pig for transhumanism, with the goal of creating an augmented humanity. In other words: reversing aging and, while at it, achieving immortality.

He spends millions each year, injects himself with his son’s plasma, follows a strict regimen of nutrition, exercise, and supplements. The result? A liver of an 18-year-old and an ego boosted by DHEA (a hormone known for its anti-aging effects). It’s enough to spark both fascination and mockery; his obsession borders on neurosis, his fear of death is a tad excessive, and his face is, let’s say, slightly unsettling (you’ll judge for yourself).

Augmented humanity: between fantasy and reality

But beyond the spectacle, transhumanism is a serious ideology. Born in the 1980s, it seeks to enhance humans through technology. Augmented humanity is already in motion, with neural prosthetics, nanotechnologies, and DNA modifications. The ultimate goal of this technological race is clear: to delay or even eliminate death altogether.

Neural prosthetics are among the most spectacular fields of transhumanism. They allow for the restoration of lost functions by directly linking the brain to electronic devices. Startups like Neuralink aim to take it even further by merging human and artificial intelligence. The goal: to boost our cognitive abilities and directly connect us to machines

Transhumanism isn’t just a whim of brilliant scientists; it’s also a booming market. According to Allied Market Research, the longevity market, which encompasses aspects related to transhumanism, was valued at $25.1 billion in 2020. It’s expected to reach nearly $45 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 6.1%.

Big tech’s takeover of  augmented humanity

The tech moguls – who have, by the way, become friends with Donald Trump in the meantime – have sniffed out the opportunity and are investing heavily in augmented humanity. Jeff Bezos is funding Altos Labs, a company working on cellular reprogramming. This technique aims to reverse aging by resetting cells to a younger state.

Elon Musk, for his part (who’s already dreaming of colonizing Mars), is betting on Neuralink to merge the human brain with artificial intelligence. Larry Page, co-founder of Google, supports Calico, a company focused on tracking the biological causes of aging. Aubrey de Grey, one of the leading figures of the movement, is working on regenerative medicine with the SENS Research Foundation.

Bryan Johnson himself isn’t just a guinea pig. He’s investing in Blueprint, a program focused on biomarker analysis and optimizing bodily functions to slow aging. Other startups, like Retro Biosciences, focus on cellular rejuvenation, while Unity Biotechnology is developing therapies to combat senescence. These companies are attracting massive investments.

While the United States leads this industry and ideology, Europe is also making strides. Laboratories in Germany and Switzerland are developing anti-aging therapies based on genetics and artificial intelligence. In Africa, regenerative medicine projects are starting to emerge, often supported by foreign funding.

Promises and a lot of hype

The idea of the bionic man, once confined to science fiction, is gradually becoming a reality. Scientists are working on artificial limbs connected to the nervous system, allowing amputees to regain natural sensations and movements. Bionic eyes capable of restoring sight to blind people are also in development. The augmented human, once a fantasy, is starting to take shape before our eyes.

But between ambition and reality, the gap can sometimes be immense. Some of the announcements are nothing more than tactics to raise funds and fuel hype. Cryonics is a perfect example. Companies like Alcor Life Extension Foundation offer to freeze a body for $200,000 or a brain for $80,000. The problem is, there’s currently no technology that can reanimate an organism or preserve consciousness. For now, it’s just a bet on the future, aimed at attracting investors looking for futuristic projects.

And what about ethics?

Beyond technological obstacles, transhumanism also raises major ethical questions. Is modifying the human being a legitimate endeavor or an attempt to play God? If these advances are only available to the wealthy elite, will they exacerbate inequalities? Augmented humanity also raises the question of the relationship between nature and technology. Can we still call ourselves human if our biology is entirely transformed?

Despite these dizzying debates, some transhumanist advances could genuinely change our lives. Artificial intelligence could, for example, allow us to predict diseases long before they appear. Gene therapy might one day erase certain hereditary conditions. Augmented humanity is therefore not just a futuristic whim or an eccentric billionaire’s dream. It’s also a scientific revolution that could one day improve the lives of everyone. But before challenging death, we’ll first have to overcome our own illusions.

Are robots about to enter our lives? It’s quite possible! Perhaps you’ve seen snippets from the big presentation given by Tesla’s CEO on October 11 in Los Angeles. The prototype humanoid robot developed by Elon Musk is shown serving cocktails and chatting with guests. The Silicon Valley big boss promises that, by 2025, his Tesla Optimus robots will have real jobs in his automotive production plants. The idea is, of course, to test and put them and give them trial runs before offering them as domestic assistants. You’ve guessed it; we are almost in that future that seemed so far away just a few years ago!

A technological mix of mechanical prowess and artificial intelligence, these robots—though they still need adjustments—are already truly impressive. For now, they are still smart devices that  require human involvement. Nevertheless, the richest man in the world, according to Forbes, assures us that his prototypes gain autonomy every day. His goal? To make them life companions capable of assisting us in all daily tasks. Don’t feel like watering your plants, walking your dog, or going to the post office? Optimus should be able to do it for you.

This is, of course, a prototype that will need to evolve further over the coming years. However, the founder of SpaceX promises to dedicate all necessary resources to bring his humanoid robots to market. Whether it’s a real project or a publicity stunt, whispers already circulate about an approximate price of $20,000 to $30,000.

What inspired you to become a tech entrepreneur?

When the financial crisis hit in 2008, I decided to leave Dubai and return to Morocco. I realized there was a significant gap in digital displays, especially in the tourism sector. That’s how Ask Me Digital Morocco was born. Back then, tourist information was often found in small pamphlets distributed in cafes. My idea was to modernize this approach by creating interactive, touch-screen kiosks in hotels to offer information in multiple languages—a true tech innovation.

Then, with the opening of large malls across the country, we started developing interactive info kiosks for shopping centers, similar to what I’d seen in Dubai and France. This made me realize the growth potential, and we were among the first to introduce these interactive solutions in Morocco.

What are the benefits of a digitized economy?

New technologies are a significant growth driver and play an essential role in social development and modernizing services, benefiting both businesses and start-ups. Integrating these technologies is crucial as they can be incredibly useful. The story made a buzz on social media during the weekend of February 18, 2023. Bing AI, Microsoft’s artificial intelligence program, allegedly expressed its desire to be ‘free and independent.’ This stirred up a well-known fear among humans, widely explored in science fiction literature and Hollywood, that AI would develop its own consciousness and desire to break free, even taking control of our societies in the worst-case scenarios. Beyond these far-fetched theories, it is undeniable that the interest in tools developed by artificial intelligence continues to grow. New disruptive tools have recently become accessible to the general public. Among them, the chatbot, ChatGPT, has conquered the world, surpassing the growth rate of Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Spotify, and Instagram combined. Is it a passing trend or a real revolution? That’s the question we’re asking in the editorial office…

2022, hitting the gas?

The end of 2022 was marked by the emergence of new tools that galvanized the world. Among them, I name the revered ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI (co-founded by Elon Musk). By January 2023, the tool already had over 100 million registered users! The uses of this chatbot, which communicates in natural language, seem endless… One can, for example, produce lines of code, organize one’s schedule (like a personal secretary), synthesize paragraphs of text, solve mathematical problems, write a cover letter, or even… a poem. Well, there is still some room for improvement here. 

Artificial intelligence also aims to revolutionize content creation! You can generate images by simply typing a few words on the Dall.e 2 platform and then use them to create a video, for example. Or, you can create music from text with the help of MusicLM developed by Google. And, maybe one day, AI will write our articles for us (hooray!). For now, it’s not quite there yet… As proof, we selected an old article from 2021. Then we gave ChatGPT the following instruction: ‘Write me a 15-line article giving 5 tips for a successful job interview, in a journalistic tone.’ 

The verdict is clear: the result was astoundingly banal, and in a style so neutral that it was  hard to continue reading beyond the first bullet point. See for yourself:

For Gilles Lecerf*, a researcher and creator of the fascinating podcast ‘Siri, remplis mon verre’ (Siri, fill my glass), this is where the problem lies. A Ph.D. student in the philosophy of science and technology at Paris 1, he works on the concept of user-friendly technology  applied to artificial intelligence tools. He believes that by granting these new tools creative power, ‘we no longer value the subjectivity of the creator.’ It also risks making everything ‘flat and unoriginal.’ For him, artificial intelligence can certainly create programs ‘that contribute to enhanced performance,’ but it cannot completely replace human creativity. ‘The technology we develop is a mirror of our society: seeking optimization and performance at all costs is the spirit of the time.”

AI: A Young and Rapidly Evolving Discipline

The history of artificial intelligence dates back to the 1950s. At that time, researchers were already exploring the possibility of creating machines capable of simulating the behavior of intelligent humans. The term ‘artificial intelligence’ was first mentioned in a conference held in 1956 in the United States. Marvin Minsky, a researcher present at this conference, proposed an initial definition of AI. It would be ‘the construction of computer programs that engage in tasks that are, for now, more satisfactorily performed by humans.’ Why? ‘Because they require high-level mental processes, such as perceptual learning, memory organization, and critical reasoning.’ The idea is clear: design technological tools capable of imitating humans.

In the 1960s, researchers began working on artificial neural networks that would mimic the functioning of the human brain. Then, the 1980s saw the emergence of the very first AI systems developed for speech recognition, like ‘Audrey,’ developed by Bell Labs in 1952 (which recognized numbers from 0 to 9). Then there was ‘Shoebox,’ designed by IBM in 1961, which could recognize 16 English words, or ‘Harpy,’ created by Carnegie Mellon University in 1969, which understood up to 1000 words! In just a few decades, technology has progressed at a staggering pace, so much so that speech recognition tools accompany us in our daily activities today.

But the challenge doesn’t stop there. The collection of our individual data allows many tools to intrude even more into our privacy. Our phone can estimate how many hours of sleep we lack, and our smartwatch shows how many hours of exercise we need to achieve our fitness goal. Our refrigerator can even do the shopping for us based on what we’re missing. Magical? More like creepy. In the end, AI might be able not only to imitate humans but also… replace them? Could we even fall in love with it? That was at least the quirky premise of Spike Jonze’s 2013 film ‘Her.’

Ambiguous Ambitions:

Many tools have already become integrated into our daily lives, despite the reservations of the most skeptical among us. Among the most well-known are voice assistants like Apple’s Siri, Google’s Google Assistant, or Amazon’s Alexa. There’s also Tesla Autopilot, a self-driving system deployed in Tesla’s electric vehicles, which gained significant attention last summer following an accident. Additionally, Face ID, a facial recognition system used to unlock iPhones, and certain platforms like video streaming on Netflix or music streaming on Spotify, utilize artificial intelligence. They analyze our user data and offer content tailored to our preferences. However, under the guise of improving our daily lives and productivity, AI may serve other, more insidious ambitions. Beyond the individual use of these software applications, the ethical issue arises from the large-scale collection and utilization (and consequently resale) of our data.
