The Savoie region is also celebrated for its laid-back lifestyle, wines, and cuisine (think fondue, raclette, and tartiflette, of course).

If you choose Val d’Isère, we recommend making the Club Med Alpes Val d’Isère your home base. As for accommodations, stay at Deplar Farm in Ólafsfjörður. This secret 17th-century refuge, cozy yet luxurious, is nestled in the heart of nature and has a touch of English cottage charm. Recently modernized with a lodge-style extension, it combines minimalist design with ultimate comfort.

Aspen, United States

Ski vacations in the U.S. may not be top of mind, but the Shoelifer team decided to dream big. Aspen, nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, quickly became our “splurge” destination. Dubbed the “Saint-Tropez of the Rockies,” Aspen combines majestic peaks, lush forests, a passion for skiing (with four ski resorts), luxury shopping, and a glamorous social scene.

This charming and colorful town is brimming with excellent restaurants and boutiques. The slopes—wide as highways—are beginner-friendly, catering to slower-paced skiing (especially at Buttermilk). Advanced skiers can explore moguls and steeper backcountry  runs, though the overall vibe is about enjoyment rather than risk-taking.

We recommend staying at the St. Regis Aspen Resort, located at the foot of Aspen Mountain. This quintessentially American hotel is spacious, comfortable, and luxurious, both indoors and outdoors. To embrace the alpine air, the resort features intimate outdoor lounges with fireplaces, along with heated pools and jacuzzis.

After your ski vacation in Aspen, consider extending your trip to explore iconic Chicago. Colorado and Illinois are neighboring states, and the flight takes less than three hours. Named the Best Big City in the U.S. in 2023, Chicago—on the shores of Lake Michigan—boasts some of the country’s boldest and most spectacular architecture. Dynamic and welcoming, Chicago feels like home, with its rich history as a hub for gangsters, the mafia, and its legacy as the birthplace of rock, blues, and house music.

A city in the southeast of France, Arles is full of charm, art, and history, where the stones have almost as many beautiful stories to tell as the inhabitants. Located at the foot of the Alpilles and at the entrance to the Camargue, this town, with its Roman and Romanesque monuments, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. If the famous Lettres de mon moulin, written by Alphonse Daudet in the late 19th century, taught us that an “Arlésienne” is a person you wait for but who never arrives, I can guarantee you that Arles will leave you with only one desire: to return. And you’ll want to return with all your friends, with whom you’ve shared your desire to discover Arles and the region.

What we love to do there:

Strolling around and getting pleasantly lost in the maze of small streets within the old city’s walls. Taking the time to admire the buildings and monuments from a sunny terrace while sipping a Perrier or a local glass of rosé.

Entering the sublime Saint-Trophime Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in France, famous for its Aubusson tapestries. Visiting the arenas and imagining life in 8 AD, swooning over the biceps of the gladiators fighting there. Considering taking the “Van Gogh” tour organized by the Tourist Office—a very cool way to experience the city through the steps of the famous painter who found so much inspiration in Arles.

Visiting Luma, the contemporary art foundation inaugurated in 2021, and strolling through the museum’s aisles. Sometimes being amazed and other times, quite (very) perplexed by so many puzzling works. Finally, browsing local product shops and returning with suitcases full of Camargue rice, flavored fleur de sel, lavender sachets, and other sweets.

My must-sees:

Inari

Probably one of the best restaurants in town. Certainly the most popular. One of those places you might think is trendy but, in reality, is so well-established and authentic. The media attention is not just a passing fad.

Nestled in a chapel dating back to 1224 on Place Voltaire, Inari is the first restaurant where the talented chef Céline Pham set up her kitchen after delighting us with numerous pop-up events.

And it creates a truly delightful location, embodied by the chef who has put all her heart and convictions into it. The menus change with the seasons, according to the market. The dishes evolve, but the chef’s precision and her sharp sense of balance remain unchanged.

A restaurant where every flavor is respected and enhanced. A place where every dish is well thought out. To our delight.

Sauvage

The name is definitely a contradiction for  the coziest place in town. A temple of delicacies. A magnificent bakery where everything is handmade. The bread is kneaded by hand and baked long enough to have the taste of happiness.

You’ll find all the regional treats like orange blossom navettes, the famous Provencal pompe in a delicate lavender version, and many sourdough loaves.

In short, plenty of good things, perfect for breakfast or a snack at any time! I suggest you even take some to go—they travel surprisingly well.

Moustique

An essential location  in town. A shop that’s a bit like a curiosity cabinet where good taste seems to be a guiding principle. Here, every object seems to have a story to tell. It’s the perfect shop to buy—especially for yourself—original and local gifts. A big favorite for decorative accessories and stationery.

Le Méjan Cinema and Actes Sud Bookstore

One of my favorite cinemas ever! Firstly, it’s attached to the beautiful Actes Sud bookstore. One of my favorite bookstores, because Actes Sud is the best publishing house in the world! What? Am I not being objective? So what!

More seriously, Actes Sud is a publishing house that has managed to maintain its unique brand: a spirit of discovery and sharing.

And its cinema is a reflection of this. Small theaters but with a very fine, demanding, and eclectic program. There’s always an interesting film playing. And if you’re late, all is not lost. Take a stroll around the bookstore. Dozens of fascinating books and just as many invitations to travel await you.

Les Carrières des lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence

A few kilometers from Arles is the village of Les Baux-de-Provence, perched on the rock, offering breathtaking views. Often voted “most beautiful village in France,” it’s one of those exceptional places to visit at least once in your life.

There, you’ll find the Carrières des Lumières. Monumental white stone quarries rising 14 meters high, they host exceptional immersive exhibitions. Clearly a must-see in the region. This season features an exhibition on Orientalists, particularly around the travel diaries of Delacroix. It’s very tempting!

The CILA

The Leila Alaoui Intercultural Center is a space dedicated to art and culture, in homage to the work and spirit of Leila Alaoui, the photographer who tragically passed away in January 2016, killed in an attack in Ouagadougou. CILA is not just a cultural center. It’s a place of meetings, exchanges: luminous, open, generous, and profound. Just like Leila was.

Where to stay

L’Arlatan

Simply a little gem! This former medieval mansion, one of the most beautiful in the city, was transformed by the brilliant Cuban artist Jorge Pardo. A colorful and vibrant decor with a monumental mosaic stretching over 6,000 m². Amid this explosion of colors is a haven of peace: a patio and a pool where it’s a pleasure to relax.

Le Nord Pinus

The city’s iconic hotel has evolved over time without losing the soul so dear to Jean Cocteau. Picasso, Piaf, and Montand were regulars. Fernandel drank pastis there. And it’s easy to see why. The heart of the city seems to beat here.

With a bohemian-chic decor full of charm, the place pulls off the daring feat of being both retro and trendy — just as I love it!  Special mention for the wine bar with its wood paneling where you can easily lose yourself, remaking the world with new friends at the next table.

Tamuda Bay embodies the “Mediterranean dream,” with its clean lines and sandy hues that blend seamlessly with the turquoise waters of the Alboran Sea, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean.

The Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay spans ten hectares along a stunning 700-meter stretch of beach, surrounded by lush gardens filled with palm, lemon, and hackberry trees. Guests can choose from 55 luxury suites and villas, ranging from 80 square meters for one-bedroom suites to the 1,700 square meter Royal Villa. Each accommodation offers views of the sea, gardens, or the Rif Mountains.

Inside, the cozy yet contemporary decor merges Moroccan craftsmanship—marquetry, zellige tiles, woven textures, and marble mosaics—with subtle maritime touches, including mother-of-pearl chandeliers illuminating works by renowned Moroccan artists like Ghizlane Sahli, Malika Agueznay, Najia Mehadji, and Ben Cheffaj. Additionally, room temperature, lighting, and curtain control are managed by touchscreen tablets—a high-tech luxury that quickly becomes addictive.

The aptly named Royal Villa is essentially three villas in one, featuring a reception room, dining room, cinema room, private spa with a hammam, music room, and indoor pool. For ultimate privacy, it’s separated from the beach by a small dune—a dreamlike experience.

A Holistic Experience

One of the Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay’s greatest strengths is its holistic approach, offering an inclusive experience that nurtures both body and soul. At Marrakech, Royal Mansour pioneered a unique, multi-sensory experience that our team covered in a previous episode of Viens je t’emmène. We highlighted innovations like watsu (a blend of water and shiatsu), art therapy, and nature-inspired BBQ lunches at an artist’s table, alongside personalized wellness programs.

At Tamuda Bay, the experience retains this speciality but with a fresh approach, blending a natural escape with coziness and cutting-edge self-care technology. 

Destination Medi-Spa

At the heart of this approach is the Medi-Spa, one of the resort’s key features. Combining therapeutic and medical treatments, it is run by a team of doctors and professionals in a classy 4,300-square-meter facility, complete with emerald marble pools and contemporary mashrabiya screens. With two stunning pools (one filled with seawater and the other, the “Quiet Pool”, featuring impressive moon-shaped artwork), relaxation is maximized.  Additional facilities include a hammam, eight private treatment cabins, a cryotherapy room, a watsu pool, and an innovative Himalayan Cave with Himalayan salt diffusion—known for detoxifying the lungs, the foundation of our immune system.

The Medi-Spa offers anti-aging, dermatology, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, naturopathy, and dietary consultations, all based on the latest scientific advancements. Custom wellness programs (Detox, Aging Well, Weight Control) are also available and monitored for three months post-stay. Guests can pamper themselves with face, body, nail, and hair treatments from top brands like Dr. Burgener, marocMaroc, CND Shellac, and Leonor Greyl. Additionally, the Medi-Spa is the only facility in Morocco to offer a Reax machine, combining fitness training with neuroscience. In short, the Medi-Spa is a destination in itself.

While the full medical spa experience will be available from next spring, wellness and beauty treatments are already open.

Epicurean and Social Lifestyle

The Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay’s Medi-Spa reflects the establishment’s philosophy of fostering well-being and the Mediterranean “dolce vita.” Take, for instance, the Alboran Club, a cozy and refined space featuring a now-iconic shell-shaped staircase. Here, guests can relax in a variety of settings, including a plush, intimate library stocked with board games or a panoramic terrace for sunset views accompanied by piano or live band music.

Providing this serene ambiance requires an almost magical level of service. The Royal Mansour Collection refers to it as “couture service,” facilitated by a modern underground labyrinth where staff manage laundry, decorations, and catering behind the scenes.

Gastronomic Eden

When it comes to dining (a priority for us), the Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay spares no expense, featuring four restaurants led by three Michelin-starred chefs: the Alajmo brothers, Eric Frechon, and Quique Dacosta.

At Coccinella, styled as a traditional trattoria, the Alajmo brothers, Massimiliano and Raffaele, transport guests to Italy with a decor inspired by Venetian gardens. Breakfasts feature an unforgettable cappuccino and homemade pastries, alongside the Moroccan harcha, a favorite of our team. For lunch or dinner, guests can enjoy fresh pasta, pizzas, and specialties like lobster Catalana or veal tonnato.

The chef Frechon helms La Table, where his innovative and refined cuisine combines Moroccan flavors with subtle Japanese nuances. For example, locally sourced lobster with yuzu kosho mayonnaise or slow-cooked beef cheek with red miso and ginger-infused carrot puree. The dessert menu is more classic, but the chocolate soufflé with roasted coffee ice cream is irresistible.

At Méditerranée, decorated in white and blue with a breezy feel, Quique Dacosta (with seven Michelin stars) showcases Spanish seafood specialties. If you’ve never tried sea urchin gratin, now’s the time!

Chef Dacosta also oversees Pool Beach, where his culinary creativity has inspired Palmas, a bento box-style tapas selection inspired by global cuisines.

A World of Its Own

The Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay is entirely kid-friendly. Upon arrival, children receive a plush lion toy, the hotel’s mascot and a symbol of Morocco. Children ages 4-12 are welcomed at the colorful and cozy Lilas Beach Kids Club, complete with Moroccan tents, swings, and zellige tiles. Activities range from Arabic calligraphy and tagine painting to music, cooking, mixology, botany, and boat trips—not to mention beach ice cream parties. The professional, energetic team ensures kids have the time of their lives.
