Zineb  has always known that one day she would pursue creation, whether in fashion or design, it didn’t matter. “It was always there, somewhere inside me,” says Zineb Boutaleb. She dabbled in many things before founding Casatribana, the interior decoration and art of living brand, three years ago. At first glance, nothing seemed to lead her toward design. Born into a family of doctors and financiers, this true Casablancan flew, after a conventional education, to George Washington University in Washington to study finance.

At 23, with her diploma in hand, Zineb Boutaleb returned to Morocco. The goal: a career in banking. The ranks were ready to be climbed, family expectations were met, and a managerial career loomed on the horizon. But the little girl inside her who used to gather fabric scraps to make clothes for her dolls with her small sewing machine whispered a different tune in her ear. “When I was a child, I spent my time rearranging the spaces in my parents’ house, moving furniture around, changing paintings on the walls,” she explains.

A successful career change

The transition into the creative world occurred gradually, starting with franchises in decoration and fashion. By Malene Birger and Belair were among the ready-to-wear brands she introduced to Casablanca. This  reflected her style, already defining Casatribana’s signature: bohemian and chic. Because Zineb Boutaleb is also a fashionista with sharp taste, whose entourage draws inspiration from her. “I got into fashion because people always told me they loved my looks. I’ve always had a style of my own, very eclectic. I can be boho one day and preppy the next. I love following my heart, having fun creating unexpected mixes, figuring out how to put everything together so that the result is interesting. The key to my style is mixing, just like in decoration with Casatribana.”

Her entry into interior architecture, 15 years ago, was the key step in her career change. Her experience with Maison de Famille, a French décor company with an immersive concept, where she introduced the franchise to Casablanca, was particularly formative. “The showroom was designed like a house where you walk through the rooms. It’s based on this model that I would like to see my own brand evolve one day.” During this period, she collaborated on hotel projects in Morocco, renovating Sofitels, among others, alongside seasoned architects from whom she learned a great deal.

Through her experiences, guided by her creativity,  Zineb trained on the job, far from academic studies. And she trusted her instincts: as she says, “I only go by feeling.” As for marketing, she learned  by working with professionals sent by the brand she was working with to arrange window displays. She enjoyed it and eventually put her skills to work for other brands. Alongside her learning experience with brands, the young woman created her own interior design agency, Studio Z, nine years ago. “I help my clients and real estate developers with the design of their interiors, whether it’s villas or model apartments.”

Tribal quest

Guided by sharp instincts and encouraged by those close to her who spotted her talent before she did, the idea of transferring her bohemian spirit into the world of interior design began to take shape. It was during a walk in the Medina of Marrakech that Zineb Boutaleb had her breakthrough moment: “That day, I rediscovered the richness of our local craftsmanship.” Why not reinterpret these treasures through her own vision, drawing inspiration from her travels in South Africa, Indonesia, and Turkey? Not to mention her experience working with fabric designers.

A first collection was born almost on a whim. “I was offered the chance to do a pop-up in Casablanca. I spread my cushions on a big table, as if I were in a souk. And I sold everything! I couldn’t believe it. It made me want to keep going.” In 2022, she launched Casatribana. “The word ‘casa’ (house in Spanish) evokes a familiar place. ‘Tribana’ infuses it with artisanal elements and tribal influences. This mix suggests that each item is not just a product, but a carefully crafted piece that tells a story and brings warmth, tradition, and a touch of exoticism to every interior,” says the creator, who defines herself as a “nomad.”

The brand’s identity? A true way of life. It’s  bold mix of fabrics sourced from all continents: ikats from Indonesia and Uzbekistan, wax prints from Ivory Coast, Moroccan wool, layered in a joyful blend of materials, colors, and patterns. Zineb is keen on offering limited editions, responding to the public’s demand for uniqueness. “Each cushion collection, for example, only includes six pieces, made from natural and artisanal materials in small quantities, making each item almost unique.”

The designer emphasizes the story that each piece tells, a real journey through cultures — an  identity that offers clients the possibility to create their own combinations, always with raw, natural materials, such as raffia, wool, velvet, and cotton in artisanal and tribal patterns. She replicates this process for her table sets, dinnerware, and lampshades collections.

As for the creative process, it, like everything else, is about feeling. “I buy things I fall in love with, and once at the showroom, I mix the fabrics.” The brand’s color evolution, from a muted and earthy palette to more vibrant tones, happens as she discovers new textiles.

A moroccan adventure

Although the creator’s inspirations transcend borders, Casatribana remains a brand with strong Moroccan roots. “It’s a tribute to local craftsmanship, whose inspiration and production are deeply rooted in Morocco.” Zineb Boutaleb is passionate about showcasing the craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans: embroiderers, ceramists, upholsterers, etc.  “Each piece alludes  to Moroccan culture and celebrates cultural diversity.” The originality of Casatribana is in this unique blend of styles, both “bohemian chic, Moroccan, and tribal.” Its  audacious and distinctive approach,  especially when many interior design brands in Morocco still stick to reinterpreting the classics.

Since the cushion collection presented at the Casablanca pop-up, the brand has expanded its reach, notably with ceramics for which Zineb Boutaleb hand-designs the patterns. A new collection is scheduled for January 2026. Another important innovation for Casatribana: the development of its own fabric collection in collaboration with a European publisher, aimed at tableware and small furniture, with the motifs from the collection as the guiding thread.

Three years after the launch of Casatribana, born “from a wish” and above all “to have fun,” the designer has proven her talents not only as a creator but also as an entrepreneur. Thanks to an international approach aimed at design professionals, the brand has managed to respond to the global enthusiasm for the boho-chic spirit in interior design, offering exclusive and high-end pieces. Based in Marrakech for two years, Zineb Boutaleb benefits from the city’s international openness as a source of inspiration and a place for exchanges. “I mainly sell to European clients via platforms like El Fenn in Marrakech and also export to Portugal.”

After an intuitive launch, the designer is now well-supported to develop her presence in the European market through participation in trade fairs and mastery of production and logistics. The United States isthe next step. In the meantime, Zineb Boutaleb focuses her energy on designing her catalog and organizing photoshoots to support her expansion abroad. And she welcomes guests at her showroom in Marrakech, by appointment only. A word to the wise…

For nearly two centuries, Christofle has revolutionized silversmithing while embodying the French art of living. In Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD), nestled within the Louvre Palace, is dedicating an exceptional exhibition to this prestigious craftsmanship, aptly titled “Christofle, A Brilliant History.”

Running until April 20, 2025, this major retrospective traces Christofle’s evolution from its founding in 1830 to the present day. Featuring over 600 pieces of silverware, paintings, drawings, and posters sourced from the Bouilhet-Christofle Conservatory and prestigious national collections, the exhibition unveils how founders Charles Christofle and Henri Bouilhet transformed silver into a true art form.

Through technical innovations, artistic collaborations, and heritage masterpieces, this immersive journey highlights a house of ingenuity that has, over the decades, elevated the art of dining while quite literally placing art on the table. Ultimately, it is a magnificent tribute from MAD, whose close ties with Christofle date back to the late 19th century.

The house of legendary tables

The exhibition unfolds across several themed spaces, each illustrating a facet of Christofle’s savoir-faire. It begins with an intimate look into the brand’s workshops, now based in Normandy and known for their unparalleled craftsmanship. Visitors are then transported into a faithfully recreated 19th-century Christofle boutique, immersing them in an era where exceptional artistry met the tastes of the time, heralding the rise of Art Nouveau and a fascination with Japanese art  and naturalism.

Among the iconic creations from this period is the “Fish-Shaped Vase,” designed by Émile Reiber, head of Christofle’s design and composition studio from 1865 to 1878. Inspired by Edo-period Japanese art (1603-1868), this piece has been reissued in silver-plated metal, preserving its distinctive aesthetic and intricate details. Staying true to its Japanese and naturalist influences, Christofle has also reissued its iconic soliflores: the onion vase, the celery vase, and the carrot bunch vase.

Another section celebrates the house’s technical prowess, particularly electrochemical silver plating—a revolutionary process patented by Charles Christofle that democratized luxury silverware. As visitors move through the exhibition, they can admire cutlery sets, tea services, and tableware that have graced the world’s most prestigious tables: La Tour d’Argent, the Normandie ocean liner, and the Orient Express train. The journey also showcases contemporary pieces designed for World’s Fairs.

The Epic “Surtout” 

To honor the tradition of World’s Fairs, the exceptionally talented silversmith and designer Jean-Pierre Cottet-Dubreuil has created a one-of-a-kind masterpiece: the “Surtout Ode to Origins.” Undoubtedly the exhibition’s showstopper, this spectacular work captivates with its modernity and scale. Crafted from solid silver, rock crystal, and mirrors, it evokes the genesis of the world through geological forms inspired by pyrite. Measuring four meters in length and requiring over a thousand hours of meticulous craftsmanship, this piece embodies Christofle’s excellence and audacity.

A fascinating historical anecdote: when Napoleon III came to power in 1852, he sought to revive courtly life at the Tuileries Palace to solidify his prestige and legitimacy. His strategy? Lavish banquets. He commissioned Christofle to create a monumental 4,000-piece service, including an elaborate Surtout—a decorative centerpiece featuring sculptures, spice boxes, candelabras, vases, and more.

Napoleon III was deeply involved in the Surtout’s creation, frequently visiting Christofle’s workshops. Delivered in 1856, the masterpiece met a tragic fate in 1871 when the Communards set fire to the Tuileries. Despite this loss, Christofle’s destiny was sealed: in the following years, the Elysée Palace, ministries, embassies, and European courts all acquired their own Christofle sets. A tradition that endures to this day.

The art of reinvention

Boldness has always been a hallmark of Christofle. To reinvent itself, the house embraced a radical transformation in the 1920s, embracing the sleek lines and geometric motifs of Art Deco. This movement inspired remarkable designs, including tableware sets imagined by the visionary designer Luc Lanel.

Christofle also distinguished itself through collaborations with renowned designers. Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti brought an avant-garde vision to its silverware in the 1950s. Later, luminaries like Andrée Putman and Martin Szekely continued this legacy, infusing Christofle’s collections with striking, minimalist designs.

Continuing this spirit of innovation, Christofle’s in-house studio has created a new piece for the exhibition: the “Affinités” water pitcher. A modern reinterpretation of the ancient amphora, it seamlessly blends steel and silver. For those wishing to take a piece of Christofle home, a selection of exclusive items is available at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs boutique, including the “Miel d’Argent” candle and the “Duel de Thé” card game, illustrated by hand.

For the Assoulines—Prosper, Martine, and their son Alexandre—culture knows no bounds as long as it can be illustrated on glossy paper. “Any topic can be interesting. When asked if they fear running out of ideas, the answer is clear: “We have themes lined up for at least the next 25 years!” With over 2,000 books published to date, opportunities continue to come the family’s way, like the chance to publish the famous Proust Questionnaire with answers from celebrities. “In 2003, the Drouot auction house gave the authorisation of use  of the two questionnaires—yes, there are two—to an acquaintance of ours, and that’s where the idea was born,” recounts Martine.

From Their Apartment to the World

Assouline’s story began in Paris 30 years ago. Prosper was in communications, and Martine came from the luxury industry. They were passionate about beautiful books. “We loved these large, illustrated books but found them a bit too conventional. So, we decided to create a book about a hotel we particularly loved: La Colombe d’Or in Saint-Paul de Vence. That’s where it all started. We worked from home, with Alexandre by my side,” Martine shares. Book after book, success followed success, and few luxury brands haven’t asked Assouline to tell their story in print.

Now based in New York, the family business continues to grow, expanding its collections and opening flagship stores (like in London) and boutiques in iconic hotels (The Plaza and The Mark Hotel in New York). The newest addition is a store in Marrakech, located in the trendy Majorelle district. Prosperity (no pun intended) comes with dedication: “I’m in the office by 6:55 every day, even on Sundays!” Prosper says. International expansion, new decorative library objects (bookends, candles, headphones), and a recent minority investment from LVMH have accelerated their growth.

Beauty Secrets

At Assouline, browsing isn’t rushed. Customers take their time, flipping  through almost every image. “The image needs to convey the emotion. People today don’t have time to read through 100 pages. We live in a visual world,” explains Martine. So, is this their secret? “Not entirely, but aesthetics are paramount. We (the couple, that is) check every page, every millimeter. Nothing is left to chance! The real secret is the storytelling,” says Prosper. “We’re like chefs,” adds Martine, echoing the star chefs they feature in their books.

A Taste of Home

And what about Morocco? “It’s home! I was born here, and I’ve carried Morocco with me everywhere. So, when we had the chance to open here, with this dual space for Ligne Roset and Assouline in Marrakech, we said yes. Plus, we’ve already published several books about Morocco: Marrakech Flair, Morocco: Kingdom of Light, and one on Mehdi Qotbi. We’re also working on more Moroccan subjects.” As we said earlier, Assouline never stops surprising us.

A healthy body in a healthy home—this could be our new mantra. Especially when we know that, paradoxically, it’s not outside but inside our homes where we breathe the most polluted air! The culprit is the toxic materials present everywhere: varnishes on floors or tiles, furniture, paints, composite materials, not to mention cleaning products or heating and cooking methods. The World Health Organization is clear on this and reports millions of deaths each year due to indoor pollution. Does that give you chills? It does for us too, which is why we decided to dive into the issue. There’s no need to move to Helsinki for cleaner air; a few changes in your habits will be enough to safeguard your health.

A greener envelope

To create a more breathable home, start by choosing eco-friendly materials and coverings. For walls, opt for water-based paints with no chemical additives. In Morocco, most manufacturers have added a green range to their catalogs. Still, be vigilant and carefully read the composition. No industrial-origin products should be listed. Does the composition include solvents? Move on. Also, ensure that pigments such as resins are of natural origin.

For flooring, the list of coverings that fit into a more sustainable decor is really long. The choice will obviously depend on the style and budget you have. But to name a few, you might choose natural wood flooring, ceramic tiles, cement tiles, or any other recycled composition. Creating a healthy home is certainly an investment. The cost of materials and substances, even if they come from nature and are minimally processed, is significantly higher.

When it comes to furniture, things get a bit more complicated. Most major retailers offer collections of chipboard furniture coated with chemical stains or paints. These often contain the highest levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), harmful to both our health and the environment. The industry started offering affordable alternatives in the 2000s, especially for babies and young children. For the rest of the house, you’ll need to be creative or spend significant budgets.

In Morocco, we are fortunate to have quality artisans and the option to choose solid woods. Just make sure to explain your expectations regarding the use of varnishes, for example. Don’t hesitate to bring the artisan who will make your custom furniture some linseed oil or borax.

A more natural decor

In terms of decor, one trend that has stood the test of time is natural-inspired decoration. Originating from cultures around the world and often revisited in a bohemian-chic style, this trend is essentially about using objects and textiles made from natural products. Ideal for ensuring a healthy interior!

In practice, prioritize recycled glass objects when possible. Choose wooden or cardboard light fixtures. Opt for cushions and bed linens made from pure cotton or linen. The current trend is also to use wicker. Conveniently, Moroccan artisans are particularly skilled in wicker and doum basketry! Baskets of all sizes and shapes, perfect for stylish storage, are easy to find. For your rugs, prefer sea rush or sisal if you’re into minimalist design, jute and its natural fibers, or naturally dyed wool rugs like Beni Ouarain or Beni M’Guild for a chic Berber vibe!

Cleaner air

While the design, layout, and decor of your interior are important, ensuring the quality of the air is crucial! First, ventilate regularly and ensure proper air circulation according to feng shui principles. This ancient Chinese art focuses on the harmony of environmental energies to promote the well-being and health of occupants. Exactly what we need, and we’ve actually discussed it here before! To achieve this, you have two options. Either consult a feng shui professional or seriously research the topic by reading some books.

Next, invest in a good air purifier, even though it might not be the most stylish addition to your decor, we admit. Choose one with filters; it will be much more effective. Each filter has a role: one for capturing dust microparticles, one for volatile gases and VOCs, and another for allergens like dust mites or pollen. The air quality will be significantly improved, and you’ll notice the difference quickly.

We often forget them, so we’ll remind you. Plants, especially air-purifying ones, are valuable allies in your quest for a healthy home! Visit a nursery and buy, for example, an azalea, a dragon tree, or a Boston fern. These plants can absorb pollutants and release oxygen. Plus, they’ll add a green touch to your home.

Finally, one last piece of advice: get rid of all your non-natural candles. You can’t imagine how toxic they are. Forget incense and its fragrant but harmful smoke. For essential oils to diffuse, dilute them with a bit of water and prefer rosewood from Asia, lemon eucalyptus, geranium, or true lavender. We’ve included a comprehensive list here.

Start from your wardrobe to your kitchen, shelves, bookshelves, and storage areas. To properly reorganize the things you truly need, you must let go of the rest.

Perfect timing – the new school year is an ideal moment to donate everything you no longer need to others or charities. Knowing that the items you struggle to part with will have a second life can help! If you start this big task for the new school year, get it in your mind right away that you’ll need to tidy up regularly. The secret to a well-organized home is to always put things back in their place every day. No procrastination allowed!

Then, organize to find things easily 

Now that you feel lighter and determined to tidy up, it’s time to rethink your habits. Whether you live in a small or large space, the principle is the same: OR-GA-NIZE. One tip that seems to make the most sense is to implement organization strategies near where the items are used. For example, plan to store your pots and pans near the cooking area.

Also, make sure you have storage spaces for toiletries in the bathroom. The idea is to make tidying simple and efficient, saving you time. Setting up multiple laundry baskets—one for whites, one for colors, and one for sheets and towels—will save you from tedious sorting when it’s time to do laundry.

In the bedroom, dividing clothes will prevent piles from turning into messy heaps where you spend hours searching for your favorite t-shirt. After all, we do this for cutlery, so why not for everything else? Inside drawers and cupboards, opt for (well-sized) boxes to separate items by type or use. In your bedroom dresser, underwear, socks, and pajamas can quickly find their rightful place again. Choose soft, lightweight containers in various colors and sizes.

In your office or library, important  documents, photo albums, and mail can also be organized in boxes. This time, opt for solid models in metal, wood, rattan, or macramé, depending on your décor style.

Among the storage tips that promise to simplify your daily life, acquiring practical, custom-made furniture is essential. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend a small fortune on new furniture. The Hamp Collection from the Spanish-origin brand Point 1920 was conceived by the designer Francesc Rifé. Inspired by neo-minimalism, the design process of the elements that constitute it is nevertheless quite complex. The designer chose to use teak (sourced from sustainable forests with controlled exploitation) which he “spun” as if it were metal, and then pleated to assert a linear aesthetic with sharp edges. While the chairs have generous seats and dimensions, their design is particularly streamlined. Hamp can be deployed according to the space you have available to implement your outdoor decor. In a minimal or maximal version (8 seats around the table, which is designed and manufactured in the Moon Garden workshops), this creation will greatly assert the warmth and comfort needed to entertain your guests!

Ethnic Inspiration

Casatribana is the Moroccan brand that reinterprets craftsmanship by infusing it with tribal notes and bohemian influences. An iconic chair for a vintage touch

Once again this year, the 2024 home decor trends makes throws essential to our sofas. The throw has become the comfort accessory that we proudly display. Carefully folded or simply tossed, this season it comes in even silkier materials. In the editorial office, we’ve chosen one of its most luxurious versions. Thanks to exceptional craftsmanship, the Italian house Loro Piana develops throws that are elegant, ultra-soft, and warm. In their 100% cashmere version, they appeal to our sense of  touch and emphasize the importance of using high-quality natural fibers. We fell for the Royal College model with its tartan design, fringes, and camel, blue, and earth tones. We’re already dreaming of snuggling up with it while watching a good series!

A fluted bar cabinet for all your storage needs

Designed by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina, the Hayama bar cabinet is undoubtedly the design piece that will add that sought-after minimalist touch to your decor. Envisioned by a Spanish designer for an Italian brand, it draws its concept from Japanese culture. It’s the precise folds of the Haori, the traditional jacket worn over kimonos, that inspired Patricia Urquiola. A gentle flame to warm our senses

Candles have taken over our homes, especially the more “decorative” variations. Entirely crafted in Europe, Baobab Collection candles are mouth-blown and hand-poured artisanally. Wallpaper in Morocco (and around the world, for that matter) has long been the same old designs seen over and over again. We all remember a jungle-themed wall at the entrance of a restaurant or a baroque-style covering adorning a bathroom like a boudoir. The advent of a luxury wallpaper market with genuine innovations, both in terms of materials and design, is relatively recent. Brands that offer products born from innovative research are rare. Only design and decor professionals, those who are sharp and discerning, know this name. That’s because, even though present in 70 countries, Masureel is one of those exclusive brands that only insiders whisper to each other.

In 2009, the Guy Masureel brand was founded by Guy Verstraete, a descendant of the family that owned the Masureel house. It’s 100% Belgian, built on traditional artisanal expertise, and responds to the renewed interest in wallpaper. Heavily inspired by nature, the brand is committed to environmentally responsible production. An environmental approach to luxury is showcased through collections of wallpapers with sophisticated textures and designs, now exclusively represented in Morocco at Cezadco.Globe. Shoelifer took advantage of Guy Verstraete’s presence in Morocco to learn more.

Can you briefly recount the history of Masureel for us?

Masureel’s history began in the heart of the Flanders Fields in 1850. It is intimately tied to the history of the arts. Masureel started with the retting of flax, which involved separating the flax fiber from the straw. In 1900, Maison Masureel wove its first cotton, and in 1937, my uncle got into thread dyeing.

As for me, I ventured into the world of wallpaper in the 1990s. In our family, the products we created were primarily crafted using advanced techniques. I wanted to develop a new universe, and it was wallpaper that allowed me to showcase the creativity that inspired me. We began by developing wall textiles, a kind of combination of textile and wallpaper. In 1995, we were actually the first on this market to develop this hybrid product called ‘non-woven.’ It consists of long fibers that offer dimensional stability. In practice, this allows you to apply the glue directly to the wall and make installation easier.

Today, it’s important to note that we hardly use paper in wallpaper anymore. Our coverings celebrate nature and offer a unique touch. We don’t use any vinyl or solvents. We have developed water-based products without PVC that provide the same efficiency with much less harm. This is what constitutes Masureel’s commitment to quality. Unique creations, innovative techniques, and an environmental focus.

After being ignored for a long time, wallpaper is making a big comeback in Morocco and around the world in decor trends. How do you explain this?

I think this interest is cyclical. In the early 19th and 20th centuries, wallpaper was everywhere. In the 1990s, the world wanted a change. Attention shifted to other materials, but it was short-lived. The nostalgia for design, especially textile materials, quickly returned to the forefront.

Masureel adds an artistic dimension to its wall coverings. Thanks to the digital age, we can develop our designs on all types of media. We can create custom designs on demand, according to architects’ orders, for example. Decorative arts inspire us a lot, but we are interested in all styles. Color and Matisse are coming back into the spotlight. During the Deco Off in Paris, it was clearly his vibrant colors that were favored. Wallpaper has reinvented itself today to better satisfy an increasingly sophisticated clientele in search of uniqueness.

What sets you apart from other luxury wallpaper publishers?

As a wallpaper manufacturer, we are one of the world leaders. We are not just publishers; we are primarily producers and we develop all our models in-house. In terms of manufacturing, digital plays a significant role but does not detract from our exclusive traditional processes. This is what sets us apart from other high-end companies. Artistic and ecological development are important values. Our collections are built around unique themes, and we plan to design textiles to coordinate in order to create comprehensive concepts to offer to our customers.
