Reaching new heights in Bergamo

Italy is a safe bet when considering a European getaway. No matter how much you travel across this country, there will always be treasures left to discover. You’ll find an old town perched on a high hill—the Città Alta—and another nestled below—the Città Bassa.

Bouchaïb Harmouzi is committed to ecology as a new horizon of demand: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children,” he remarks playfully, quoting Saint-Exupéry. But what might surprise you most about this Moroccan lodge is its radical commitment to unplugging.  At Azyar, Wi-Fi is used sparingly. It’s available in the common area, but the rooms are Wi-Fi-free. Don’t worry, though! The 4G signal is strong. However, we encourage you to embrace the experience. Speaking personally, we can tell you that getting away from screens is good for the soul! You might find yourself enjoying a book on the terrace or in the common room, where there are also board games. And yes, there’s no TV here either, and we’re perfectly fine with that. Why not allow ourselves a bit of simplicity at the end of this tumultuous year? At the editorial office, we have chosen a local trip, while still slipping into tourist mode. With nine sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage and several others recognized as intangible cultural assets, there is no shortage of ideas for planning a road trip in Morocco. Ideally, plan for around 7 days, depart  from Rabat or Casablanca (alone or with family or friends), and head towards the Agadir region. Fasten your seatbelts, take a break every two hours, and don’t forget your sunglasses and good spirits!

El Jadida, the former Portuguese fort

Bordered by a eucalyptus forest, just an hour and a half from Casablanca, El Jadida proudly displays the ramparts that have protected its medina since the 16th century. This former Portuguese city is one of the first built in Africa by Portuguese explorers. It houses a must-visit site: the famous cistern, a former armory turned later into a water reservoir for the city. With its striking arches, it served as a set for Orson Welles‘s Othello.

The heart of the city is best explored on foot, and you will gladly stop for tea at Iglesia, a former church restored into a charming hotel and restaurant. A walk along the main beach, Deauville, is a must. A long stretch of fine sand, El Jadida’s corniche is still punctuated by the remains of hotels, casinos, and pools that recall the city’s splendid aura in the 1930s and 1940s. Medina lovers can spend the night at Dar Malaïka. Nestled in a small pedestrian alley, the place is a lovely interlude where you can rest and enjoy a hearty breakfast before continuing our road trip.

For those who prefer to enjoy staying off the beaten path, head to the Maison d’Hôtes Kohinor. On the coastal road towards Oualidia, be sure to take a look at the Tazotas. These traditional stone constructions serve as farm huts in the fertile lands of Doukkala, among the most fertile in the country. Near the Sidi Moussa lagoon, a prime location for observing flamingos and other ducks, you’ll feel like your going back in time. We recommend spending the rest of your stay strolling with the ebb and flow of the tides.

By highway, the journey takes 4 hours but allows us to drive through argan trees while keeping an eye on the ocean. We arrive in the former Mogador (yes, another Portuguese city), which is one of the most visited cities in Morocco. It enjoys an exceptional microclimate that makes it an ideal destination at any time of the year. Well known for its famous Gnaoua Festival, Essaouira is a maze of alleys dotted with colorful stalls. Legend, and a bit of history too, has it that Jimi Hendrix visited the city, as well as the neighboring village of Diabat, during the summer of ’69. The hippie spirit, bohemian trend, and decidedly artistic orientation of the city can be partly explained by this.

Also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city and its well-preserved fortifications can be visited from early morning until late at night. Stroll along the fishing port where hundreds of seagulls come to snatch a few fresh sardines from the fishermen. Get lost in the alleys of Mellah while looking for Al Magana, erected by Marshal Lyautey in the 1920s. Take a windsurfing lesson in the bay… so many things to do in 2 or 3 days.

To fully enjoy the mystical vibes of the city, some of which appear in episodes of Game Of Thrones, it’s ideal to stay at Palais l’Heure Bleue. A charming hotel, classified as Relais & Châteaux, the building is a historic residence located in the heart of the old city. To discover the beauty of the surroundings you only need to travel  a short distance from the city, heading to Sidi Kaouki, where we also suggest you spend a few nights. Eco-lodges and guesthouses have flourished since the 1970s and 1980s in this region, which creates a paradise for surfers.

Riad Baoussala is an eco-lodge designed with respect for the environment. It is located halfway between Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki, and Cap Sim. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees, you will be welcomed with warmth and care. It’s the perfect compromise to enjoy the city but also its countryside by going for walks, or riding on horseback or on a quad.

Sidi Wassay, suspended above the cliffs

After about 4.5 hours of driving, our road trip in Morocco takes us to the heart of the Souss Massa National Park. Far from the beach resorts of Agadir, the mouths of the Souss and Massa rivers transport us to a wild setting. Here, life is lived to the rhythm of wildlife protection and migration. The last colony of bald ibises, flamingos, ostriches, and gazelles rule here. The cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean serve as shelters for bird species that come to mate or simply rest during the long journey that will take them to Africa in winter and Europe in summer.

All this beautiful fauna shares the environment with fishermen and the park rangers  who ensure the proper respect of the rules to avoid harm to the preserved areas . We suggest you spend the next two nights in Sidi Wassay. Facing the ocean, with a deserted beach at your feet, you can take over  the Grotte de Wassay during your stay. Its luxurious comfort and a preserved natural setting will help you escape from the world and its turmoil. That’s what slow living is. On the agenda for the day: a walk on the cliffs, bird watching, fishing, or even paragliding for the more daring.

Ouirgane, ending with the head in the stars

Before letting you go back home, we decided to offer you a last little detour through the Atlas Mountains. A 4-hour drive, passing through the highway towards Marrakech, will make Ouirgane the last stop on our Moroccan road trip. Ideally for 2 nights, you could decide to celebrate the New Year with your head in the stars. In the heart of the Toubkal National Park, you will discover a new facet of Morocco. The red mountain slopes and snowy peaks will be the idyllic backdrop for your hikes. If you’re traveling with your  family, we suggest you stay at Domaine de la Roseraie. In the pure Berber tradition, you will be accommodated in a comfortable and cozy setting, and feast on the local cuisine.

Alone or as a couple, the other possibility is to stay at Domaine Malika – Adults Only. The setting is just as comfortable and green, the cuisine delicious. From the village of Ouirgane, you can visit the Marigha salt mines and take a tour of the valley villages on a mule. You will likely taste the tafernout bread and see women weaving brightly colored carpets. In the evening, you can only be captivated by the thousands of stars visible to the naked eye, far from any light pollution!

“My unique wedding? My partner and I organized a symbolic ceremony just for the two of us at the Bacalar Lagoon in Mexico, the country where we met.” Four years ago, after a purely administrative marriage in Morocco, Sophia and Adam crossed the Atlantic to exchange their vows in a paradise-like setting. These two young people chose a unique wedding, deviating from the traditional Moroccan wedding: expensive and grandiose. “We didn’t want any fuss, and we certainly didn’t want to have a wedding just to impress others. For us, it was about celebrating our love in complete intimacy, without constraints and without any hassle,” adds her loving husband, Adam. Of course, “Due to social norms, our parents didn’t immediately understand our choice, but they eventually came around,” Sophia explains.

The Romantic Getaway

In our kingdom, wedding ceremonies are still highly codified social rituals. They are closely supervised by the parents and in-laws of the bride and groom. Nevertheless, an increasing number of Moroccan couples opt for a low-key union abroad, especially since the pandemic, which seems to have dampened the desire for grand ceremonies, according to our colleagues at The Guardian.

This type of iconoclastic and unique wedding has a name: “elopement,” an English term meaning a “romantic runaway.” In the fabulous world of wedding planners, this trend started gaining attention around 2014. It was the year when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West celebrated their wedding in Florence, Italy (by chance or coincidence). However, the ceremony, covered by media outlets worldwide, included no less than a hundred guests. So much for “incognito.” Moreover, Morocco—Marrakech, Essaouira, and Dakhla—is a popular elopement destination for lovers from around the world.

Stress-free, but pre-planning required.

Why is elopement gradually gaining popularity? Well, because it guarantees an original, serene, and authentic wedding. “We were lost in each other’s eyes on a beach, and I found it incredibly romantic and profound. It’s a moment that belongs to us, and only us. Whereas if I had a conventional Moroccan wedding, I would have thought more about my guests than about us,” says Sophia. Often, it’s also an option that dispenses with the stress of preparations and the blending of the two families (for better or for worse). “Since it was just the two of us, it cost us less. And we achieved two goals at once: the ceremony and the honeymoon,” adds Adam.

However, it’s important to note that an original wedding abroad requires some level of organization. Wedding planners recommend starting preparations six months to a year in advance.

Symbolic Union:

The first option: you get married legally through an “adoul” and the Family Court in Morocco, and then you have a ceremony abroad (like Sophia and Adam). In this case, you can easily hire a wedding planner or a private agency to organize your symbolic wedding. They can also help with vow renewals or wedding anniversaries. A simple Google search will provide dozens of agencies dedicated to organizing weddings abroad, and most of them offer free quotes.

Among the most beautiful visa-free destinations are Cape Verde, Tanzania, Ecuador, and Indonesia. A special mention to Cape Verde, where the Jules&Moi agency, for example, organizes ceremonies on a private beach, followed by snorkeling with turtles and sharks, and kite-surfing the next day. It’s an original wedding that will leave you breathless.

The Wedding and the Ceremony

The second option: you want to get married for real abroad. Keep in mind that it’s a bit more complicated. You’ll need to contact the consular authorities of Morocco beforehand to be able to have a civil marriage recognized by the authorities of the host country. In Turkey, for example, you can be married by either the Moroccan consulate or the Turkish authorities (your choice) in Istanbul. Then, for a truly original wedding, our editorial team suggests a beautiful getaway to the Princes’ Islands archipelago, located southeast of the capital.

But you can also count on Greece. Greek authorities have the prerogative to celebrate the union of any nationals. Once again, you’ll need to obtain a “certificate of eligibility for marriage” from the consular authorities and then have this union validated by the Moroccan civil registry. In an era where simplicity is increasingly trendy, this streamlined wedding option is very tempting… The most challenging part? Convincing your family!

Belcanto is an institution in Lisbon; opened in 1958, this Michelin-starred restaurant was completely renovated by José Alvillez in 2012. The young chef was awarded one Michelin star, which was followed by a second star in 2014. What to expect on your plate? Lots of creativity and, of course, great taste. In short, be prepared to be surprised, as conventionality will definitely not be on the menu.

Where to dance?

At Pensao Amor. This trendy bar/club, nestled in Lisbon’s old neighborhood, is a former brothel whose decor has been faithfully reproduced. It masters the art of tasteful ostentatiousness, with rococo-baroque extravagance. Leopard print mixed with burgundy velvet, fuchsia pink, or lace, an abundance of wall paintings, oversized chandeliers… It all comes together in a highly successful decor and a unique atmosphere. As for the ambiance, DJs take turns on the turntables all night long, playing a mix of house, hip-hop, and international hits from various eras. Where to explore?

At the Museum of Eroticism, because yes, culture (and the G-spot) knows no bounds. You can continue your exploration by visiting the Sex Museum to take it to the next level (the black and white silent X-rated films from the 1930s are quite funny). Located in the heart of the Red Light District, this museum is housed in a former warehouse with a façade dating back to the 12th century (that’s right, culture!). It features an original period plaque that says, “God is my castle.” As Alanis Morissette would say, isn’t it ironic? Spread over three exhibition floors, the museum traces the history of the Red Light District with erotic photographs, lithographs that belonged to John Lennon, and even a reenactment of a prostitute’s room from the famous district, immortalized  by Sting in his “Roxanne”song. In the museum shop, you can find souvenirs that will certainly…let’s say “serve a purpose”. We won’t say more.

When you think of traveling to Saudi Arabia, you might immediately think of Umrah, Hajj, desert provinces, and inhospitable cities. Well, think again. Under the direction of King Mohammed bin Salman (aka MBS), the country has embarked on a vast economic development and territorial transformation plan. This “Vision 2030” is a colossal project aiming to open the country and make it a cultural and tourist destination in the coming years. At the heart of this redevelopment effort, the valley of Al-‘Ula is making headlines, and for good reason: this 7,000-year-old oasis in the Medina region is the focus of a $15 billion investment plan. This is intended to restore the splendor of the numerous archaeological and natural treasures of this ancient capital of the Lihyan Kingdom, which includes the ruins of a Nabataean city (the Nabataeans were an ancient Arab trading people) rumored to rival those of Petra.

Though still under development, Al-‘Ula is already generating considerable interest abroad. For instance, the Institut du Monde Arabe dedicated an exhibition to it in early 2020 in Paris, star architect Jean Nouvel is reportedly building a luxury hotel there, and Dolce & Gabbana just presented a haute couture show, their first ever in the Middle East.t. How to get there?

There are currently no direct flights from abroad to the valley of Al-‘Ula. To get there, you must first travel to Saudi Arabia and then take a domestic flight from Riyadh or Jeddah to the oasis.

Requirements for travel?

Like most destinations currently, traveling to Saudi Arabia requires proof of full and up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination, as well as a negative PCR test taken less than 48 hours before boarding. You must also apply for an e-visa (costing 300 SAR, around 70 €) and take out medical insurance (costing 180 SAR, around 43 €). Moroccan residents in the Kingdom must quarantine for 10 days in a hotel upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, while Moroccans residing abroad and holding a Schengen visa are not subject to quarantine. (These conditions are subject to change based on the epidemiological situation).

What to know before you go?

Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, so it’s a good chance for a detox. Some upscale restaurants do not admit children, so it’s best to check in advance. Regarding dress code, female tourists are not required to wear an abaya like Saudi women, but they should preferably wear loose clothing that covers the knees and elbows.
