Rooted in Tradition

Our first impression upon arrival? The authenticity, true to the DNA of the Royal Mansour Collection. The guiding principle? “To be rooted in a region andblend intimately with its unique attributes to showcase them.” In Marrakech, the Royal Mansour is a tribute to the city’s ancient crafts and medina culture. In Casablanca, it celebrates the Art Deco era with an ultra-urban twist. Tamuda Bay embodies the “Mediterranean dream,” with its clean lines and sandy hues that blend seamlessly with the turquoise waters of the Alboran Sea, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean.

This elegant, contemporary, and decidedly nautical setting (the lobby walls are covered in thousands of seashells gathered from the beach!) evokes a French Riviera vibe from the 1970s with a cinematic, slightly retro charm. The editorial team could easily picture themselves as movie stars here.

The Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay spans ten hectares along a stunning 700-meter stretch of beach, surrounded by lush gardens filled with palm, lemon, and hackberry trees. The Medi-Spa offers anti-aging, dermatology, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, naturopathy, and dietary consultations, all based on the latest scientific advancements. Custom wellness programs (Detox, Aging Well, Weight Control) are also available and monitored for three months post-stay. Guests can pamper themselves with face, body, nail, and hair treatments from top brands like Dr. Burgener, marocMaroc, CND Shellac, and Leonor Greyl. Gastronomic Eden

When it comes to dining (a priority for us), the Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay spares no expense, featuring four restaurants led by three Michelin-starred chefs: the Alajmo brothers, Eric Frechon, and Quique Dacosta.

At Coccinella, styled as a traditional trattoria, the Alajmo brothers, Massimiliano and Raffaele, transport guests to Italy with a decor inspired by Venetian gardens. Breakfasts feature an unforgettable cappuccino and homemade pastries, alongside the Moroccan harcha, a favorite of our team. For lunch or dinner, guests can enjoy fresh pasta, pizzas, and specialties like lobster Catalana or veal tonnato.

The chef Frechon helms La Table, where his innovative and refined cuisine combines Moroccan flavors with subtle Japanese nuances. For example, locally sourced lobster with yuzu kosho mayonnaise or slow-cooked beef cheek with red miso and ginger-infused carrot puree. The dessert menu is more classic, but the chocolate soufflé with roasted coffee ice cream is irresistible.

At Méditerranée, decorated in white and blue with a breezy feel, Quique Dacosta (with seven Michelin stars) showcases Spanish seafood specialties. If you’ve never tried sea urchin gratin, now’s the time!

Chef Dacosta also oversees Pool Beach, where his culinary creativity has inspired Palmas, a bento box-style tapas selection inspired by global cuisines.

A World of Its Own

The Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay is entirely kid-friendly. Upon arrival, children receive a plush lion toy, the hotel’s mascot and a symbol of Morocco. Children ages 4-12 are welcomed at the colorful and cozy Lilas Beach Kids Club, complete with Moroccan tents, swings, and zellige tiles. Activities range from Arabic calligraphy and tagine painting to music, cooking, mixology, botany, and boat trips—not to mention beach ice cream parties. A prime location in the heart of the city

Finding a central location without being too far from the main points of interest was a challenge that the Radisson Hotel Casablanca Gauthier La Citadelle seems to have overcome.  Located at the corner of Boulevard Roudani, the hotel is housed in a 10-story building with modern architecture, punctuated with Art Deco-inspired details, and is well served by the main roads of the city.

“At last!”. That’s what the Shoelifer team thought when they crossed the doors of the Royal Mansour Casablanca, which reopened on April 15th. After eight years of titanic renovation, this mythical location  from the 1950s has come back to life. And thus, it endows the pulsating heart of the economic capital with a very (very) beautiful urban palace, located at 27 Avenue des Forces Armées Royales (FAR).

In 1951, the year of its grand opening,  the Royal Mansour Casablanca, the first five-star hotel in the metropolis, symbolized the modernity of the White City. It had become the essential meeting place for the elite, celebrities, and other global personalities.  Seventy-three years later, the Royal Mansour Casablanca is a kind of contemporary revival of that golden age. And it intends to breathe new life into this Art Deco business district, nestled between the port and the medina.

At first glance, the uniform of the valets and bellboys sets the tone. It’s a “retro-nostalgic aesthetic à la Wes Anderson,” as described by the Royal Mansour Casablanca.

 The universe of this urban palace brilliantly blends Art Deco style, sleek design, and majestic curves, all punctuated by contemporary artworks  by artists from around the world. Among them is a stylized map of Casablanca seen from above, crafted like a contemporary marquetry in glass, mirror, brass, and copper,  by artist Charles Kalpakian. Brass, an iconic element of Art Deco style, is omnipresent at the Royal Mansour Casablanca. Just like wood and marble, it is reminiscent of the luxury of transatlantic ocean liners.

From Palace to Ocean Liner

“Ocean liner” is indeed the term that comes to mind because the Royal Mansour Casablanca is a juggernaut.  In total, it consists of 23 floors, 149 rooms, suites, and private apartments, four restaurants, and a bar. Plus, it has a spa sprawling across two floors and over 2500 square meters (complete with a hammam, hair salon, and a plethora of wellness and skincare treatments), poised to become one of the new hotspots for beauty enthusiasts in the city.

But the Royal Mansour Casablanca also boasts six meeting and conference rooms, a business lounge, and a spectacular ballroom with a gold leaf ceiling capable of accommodating 450 people. It’s a city within the city, and resolutely luxurious and glamorous. Yet, the spirit of the place is (and feels) profoundly convivial, far from being stuffy.

The editorial team loved the rooms, exuding incredible elegance (plus ultra-comfy bedding). The design, inspired by the 1950s, brings together the conventions  of urban, chic, and contemporary Casablanca, with a vintage twist. In the bathrooms (featuring both a bathtub and a large shower), there’s again remarkable marquetry work combining white marble, pink marble, and brass. A nice touch: a dressing room equipped with an automatic watch winder. Another highlight: the breakfast croissants, simply delicious (a rare enough occurrence to be noted).

New spots in town

True to its roots, the Royal Mansour Casablanca caters to businesswomen and businessmen as well as tourists. But it also aims to be a place of life and encounters for urbanites, especially those from Casablanca and Rabat. In the slang of the 1950s, it’s referred to as the “hub of waves”.

The establishment boasts four restaurants. On the ground floor, there’s La Brasserie by Eric Fréchon (chef of the Epicure restaurant at the Le Bristol hotel in Paris, awarded 3 Michelin stars). Throughout the day, you can enjoy the best of classic French cuisine, with a focus on seafood (Oualidia oysters, lobsters, etc.). And you can take advantage of the terrace overlooking the patio, designed as a winter garden.

Also opening onto the patio is the Sushi Bar by Keiji Matoba, an authentic Japanese chef. A chic and intimate restaurant, where a brigade of Japanese sushi masters performs in front of our eyes to create exquisite sushi, sashimi, and other  makis. Not to mention the desserts —  absolutely heavenly. Classic but effective (and generous).

On the 23rd floor: La Grande Table Marocaine by Karim Ben Baba. A tribute to the best of Moroccan gastronomy, it offers  a 360-degree view over the entire city of Casablanca, the Hassan II Mosque, and the ocean. Between a bite of blue lobster from Oualidia and a sip of  peach m’quila, you can admire the legendary Art Deco heritage of Casa from above.

Last but not least, the 23rd floor houses a fourth establishment, Le Rooftop, dedicated to Mediterranean cuisine with an evolving concept. Chic & chill, with an exceptional panoramic view of the city and the Atlantic (which will quickly become the place to be in our humble opinion). It’s perfect for an aperitif at sunset or a romantic dinner. If you’re not prone to vertigo, you can access these two establishments via a glass walkway, for an even better view.

Very attentive to detail, the Royal Mansour Casablanca has chosen tableware designed by Bernardaud. While the cutlery, especially the chopsticks at the Sushi Bar, are designed by Christofle. So chic!

The Bar, on the ground floor, is designed as a place conducive to confidential or intimate meetings. We love its warm and theatrical atmosphere, worthy of the great American bars, where you can either enjoy a club sandwich on the go or sip on a signature cocktail. But La Fiermontina Ocean is also a story of soul and family, both romantic and multicultural. This project is led by the brother and sister team of , Yasmina Antonia Filali, CEO of the Orient-Occident Foundation, which defends the rights of migrants and refugees,and  Fouad Giacomo Filali, who masterfully manages the Fiermontina’s Family Collection, offering exceptional residences in Italy and Paris.

“Thirty years ago, my brother Fouad-Giacomo discovered a virgin land with a breathtaking view of the ocean. We then decided to build our family home there in stone and started to establish ties with the surrounding communities. He first helped the inhabitants of the village of Dchier by finding a way to bring them running water. A year later, he applied for a community development program through the Orient-Occident Foundation. That’s why part of La Fiermontina Ocean is located within the village itself, to help it develop,” says Yasmina Antonia Filali.

La Fiermontina Ocean is thus the synthesis of a family history and human values, which in June 2023 became  a hotel which prioritizes  social development and inclusion. The inhabitants of the douar (Darija for village) are integrated into the project. In addition,  the hotel’s shop sells decorative items made by migrants benefiting from the Orient-Occident Foundation.

Italian charm, French elegance, Moroccan warmth

The motto of the Fiermontina Ocean? Living in total harmony with the environment. To achieve this, the resort is designed and conceived in two areas. On the seaside, guests can stay in one of the eleven suites with a private pool and garden carved into the rock or one of the two family villas.

We especially  appreciated  its natural brightness and breathtaking views of the Atlantic. More than that, we loved the ultra-comfy and luxurious design, delicately infused with the owners’ history: a skillful blend of Italian charm, French elegance, and Moroccan warmth — with a touch of curated artwork and nods to the 1950s to 1970s.

It’s on foot (so forget about heels and other evening attire) that one reaches the central pavilion and the restaurant, nestled in a 90-hectare natural setting, composed among other things of olive trees and prickly pear cacti. Here, guests can enjoy refined dishes inspired by Italian and Moroccan chefs, prepared with fresh produce from the garden.

Inland, travelers seeking a more immersive experience can opt for one of the four traditional stone houses located in the village of Dchier. Here, it’s possible to have breakfast with the locals — a true ritual. At Fatima Zahra’s, for example, the meal starts with a rose water refreshment, followed by mint tea and warm msemen.

A stone’s throw away is the House of Cadi Filali, the patriarch of the family, a museum-homage to the Filali family, where one can also take a cooking class. Fiermontina Ocean also houses a traditional hammam and a Moorish café with its hanging terraces offering a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys.

Chill above all

Fiermontina Ocean is a 100% chill destination, an invitation to escape the hustle, to reconnect with oneself, others, and nature. Moreover, we want to be upfront:: the rooms don’t have televisions as they aren’t  really the spirit of the place.

But fear not (we already hear the hyperactive kids), there’s no time to get bored: there are so many things to do and, even more, to contemplate! To reach the beach club (yes, there is one), you can go  by ATV or on foot (between 20 and 25 minutes walk). The beach (paradisiacal) is almost deserted all year round because it’s difficult to access. And the ocean is very swimmable in this area (very little current). The place also contains a preserved dune, where you can have a picnic and admire the sunset. Luxury is in simplicity, and Fiermontina Ocean understands that perfectly!

Newly opened  (November 2023), the Rosemary is a bed & breakfast located in the heart of the medina. Designed by LRNCE, this beautiful riad with five rooms showcases local craftsmanship and contemporary design. Indeed, the Belgian creator has perfected every detail to make you travel differently, in a magical atmosphere where you simply feel good. The editorial team wanted to test The Saint Regis La Bahia Blanca, a brand-new hotel in Tamuda Bay. This luxury resort is the first of its kind opened by Marriott International in the Maghreb, choosing the Moroccan Riviera. In total, 35,000 square meters along the Mediterranean, 83 rooms, and 17 suites create  “havens of serenity.”

Double panoramic view

Most importantly, it boasts  a breathtaking geographical location. It is a  beachfront hotel on the white sands  of Tamuda Bay (one of the most beautiful in the region) surrounded by lush gardens, while also offering a double panoramic view of Cabo Negro on one side, and Ceuta and Spain on the other. If you dream of an escape, you’re in the right place. From the hotel, you can enjoy a long walk along the water (about an hour) to the Al Andalus complex (for those familiar with the region). Thenyou can continue to Marina Smir, its bay, and various water activities.

The taste of authenticity

In terms of architecture, this hotel in Tamuda Bay draws inspiration from Hispano-Moorish architecture, with Tetouan, “the daughter of Granada,” being a perfect setting. For the sake of authenticity, The Saint Regis La Bahia Blanca has collaborated with local artists and artisans from the Royal Artisanal School and the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan. Among them is Amine Asselman, a multidisciplinary Tetouani artist, who has created several exclusive and high-design pieces of zellige.

The Hollywood Regency Style

Inside, the decoration is inspired by American bourgeois interiors, also known as Hollywood Regency style:, opulent, very bright, and at the same time, incredibly cozy. It contributes to a bubble of comfort that is perfect for an off-season “wellness” stay, whether with a partner, family, or friends. This hotel in Tamuda Bay is also a great option for the holiday season, as it offers a fitness center with a spa, pools, and massages. And don’t forget the ultra-comforting “tea time” at the Library, inspired by the American Café Society, for a journey into the past. Be sure to also stop for drinks at the St Regis Bar, inspired by the iconic King Cole Bar at the St Regis New York, where champagne is popped  every evening at 7 p.m., preserving a sacred ritual, inspired by the Napoleonic wars, to celebrate the transition from day to night. Fine Dining

On the dining side, the editorial team particularly enjoyed La Baie Blanche, the brasserie of this hotel in Tamuda Bay, which combines French craftsmanship with Moroccan influences — and where seafood reigns supreme.

At the Bahia Vista Beach Bar & Grill, an intimate and casual beach restaurant, Shoelifer enjoyed succulent lamb chops and ceviches, all skillfully led by executive chef Salim Aït Ezzine, a graduate of the Hotel School of Marrakech. Having worked in the kitchens of the Relais Château Ksar Chagh-Bagh and the Fairmont Royal Palm, located in the Red City, Salim Aït Ezzine has notably collaborated with world-renowned chefs: Yannick Alléno, Jean-François Piège, Philippe Jourdain, and Giancarlo Morelli. That’s quite a pedigree.

One small, but important detail: this hotel in Tamuda Bay likes to highlight seasonal products. We stayed there during the clementine season, which was featured in chocolates, macarons, and gazelle horns. Yum. Open to the public since the fall (after a soft opening on July 15), the establishment could become one of your favorite spots — ummer or winter.

The centenary of La Mamounia? Shoelifer had the pleasure of being invited, and we’re going to tell you everything. From October 4th to 8th, the one nicknamed the Grand Dame spectacularly celebrated its hundred years and…and went big. In total, it was four days of festivities, and we expected nothing less; La Mamounia is to Marrakech what the Ritz is to Paris. It is an institution and a flagship of hospitality, among the most prestigious establishments in the world, with a rich history dating back to the 18th century.

At that time, the Alaouite sultan, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah had offered his son, Prince Al Mamoun, a sumptuous thirteen-hectare orchard. He turned it into a place dedicated to celebrations and botany. Two centuries later, the Railway Company decided to build a hotel there. French architects Henri Prost and Antoine Marchisio then designed a building that combines the ancestral traditions  of Moroccan architecture with the styles of Art Deco. In 1923, “La Mams,” as insiders say, was opened to the public. It was a meeting place for the world’s greatest, both stars and artists.  

The centennial lady, the masterpiece

But let’s get to the heart of the matter. On the occasion of the centenary of La Mamounia, the luxurious establishment revealed its exceptional renovations. In a few months, the establishment “underwent a real facelift,” carried out by internationally renowned designer and interior architect Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, respectively. Recall that the editorial team had already extensively covered their initial restoration work in some areas of the hotel in 2020.

The renovations, undoubtedly the most breathtaking, are displayed in the gigantic reception lobby, the beating heart of La Mamounia. In its center, the famous statue of a man on a camel pointing a spear at a jaguar (made in 1907) has been replaced by the Centenary Chandelier, extraordinary chandelier with pendants, designed by the Jouin Manku firm, inspired by traditional Tamazight jewelry. It’s an ode to the Berber woman, enveloping and sumptuous, like two necklaces suspended in space and time. It’s a nod to La Mamounia’s centenary, confirming its timeless character. 

A pure moment of history

Another novelty: the Alcoves. For this moorish-inspired reception area, the Jouin Manku firm has recreated an intimate atmosphere, reminiscent of the Saharan oases of yesteryear. Each alcove presents itself as a cabinet of curiosities (a flagship trend in interior decoration 2023/2024), highlighting craftsmanship and the art of living: tea, jewelry, saddlery, etc.Last but not least is the Salon d’honneur, now the small museum of La Mamounia. Inside, is a “Wall of Fame”, highlighting the dozens of personalities who have stayed in this iconic place, as well as guestbooks. It’s a pure moment of history in a redesigned, ultra-comfy lounge with blue tones, just like the attire of the Tuaregs and the desert nights.

Not to forget the typically Art Deco Majorelle Bar, worthy of the Orient Express, the Majorelle Lounge (formerly the Italian Bar), hyper luminous with its bay windows. Overall, La Mamounia now presents itself in balanced, playful light, playing with volumes and brightness. In short, you guessed it: La Mamounia’s centenary gave Shoelifer a true feast for the eyes.

Goodies and Delights

During the festivities, La Mamounia first had a special thought for the staff, who bring this mythical establishment to life every day. Of course, the first day of celebrations took place with a small group, bringing together “the Mamounia family” and all its employees. Above all, the hotel wanted to highlight this essential value: that of the doorman (bawab in Darija), the client’s first contact, be elevated to the rank of an icon at La Mamounia. The hotel decided to make him its mascot through a figurine incorporating the palace’s olfactory signature (cedar and dates), a goodie available at the Mamounia Boutique since October 6th.

Pierre Hermé, one of the most famous pastry chefs, who has been collaborating with La Mamounia for a long time, also went all out. Visitors have the pleasure of discovering and tasting the Eternal Mamounia Macaron (rose, jasmine, maquis honey, and saffron), the Amanlou chocolate candy, or the Centenary Wedding Cake (almond, orange, etc.). How would we describe  La Mamounia’s centenary in one word? Uum (yes, we keep it simple).

Now for the “Tell me about La Mamounia in six dishes” competition, organized by the establishment itself, which took place from November 2022 to January 2023. Among the 70 candidates, young Adam Amzadou from the Art’com Sup Casablanca school managed to impress the jury. An “innovative and poetic” design that will be produced by one of the world’s largest porcelain houses,  Bernardaud, and which will gradually become La Mamounia’s new tableware. The editorial team had the pleasure of dining with it: a real feast for the eyes! And of course we appreciate supporting luxury craftsmanship, which really needs it!

The sense of celebration

In addition to all these surprises, La Mamounia’s centenary offered unforgettable festivities. The editorial team (who thoroughly enjoyed it) can even tell you that the cream of Casablanca and Rabat attended, just like international personalities, whether new Marrakech residents or not (Laurent Lafitte, Marisa Berenson, Dominique Strauss-Kahn). On the fashion side, everyone was dressed to the nines, brilliantly embodying the dress code: long dress & black tie. Yes, really, we want to emphasize this effort, it’s rare! 

Special mention for the vibrant concerto of the famous pianist Sofiane Pamart, whose artistic sensitivity brought a lot of emotions to La Mamounia’s centenary. The “fiesta” peaked on the fourth and last day, with a drone show and an impressive fireworks display and, of course, Mika’s concert, always generous with his audience.

But because La Mamounia has Marrakech and Morocco at heart, this evening was first placed under the sign of solidarity with all the victims of the deadly earthquake on September 8th. The establishment even made a donation of 10 million dirhams. La Mamounia will never cease to amaze us– and we’re already looking forward to the next celebration!

In this ultra-connected world, we invite you to pause for a moment and disconnect from it – literally. For that, head to Tulum and one of the unconventional houses at Azulik.
