As Tanjazz 2023 returns for a new edition, our editorial team explores the must-visit spots in the Door of Africa! From the Nord Pinus Hotel to El Morocco Club and onto Las Chicas… Right this way!

The Tanjazz Festival is back from September 22 to 24, 2023. For its 22nd edition, it offers a more cosmopolitan lineup than ever before. The Gipsy Kings feat. Nicolas Reyes (masters of rumba flamenca), pianist Omar Sosa with his mystical Afro-Cuban rhythms, virtuoso boogie-woogie trumpeter Nirek Mokar, and more. In short, Tanjazz 2023 promises to be electric! If you’re one of the lucky festival-goers, there’s nothing stopping you from wandering the streets of the white city. Shoelifer recently offered you a glimpse of the new spots in Tangier. However, some classic locations remain essential! Here are our top 5 favorites.

La Galerie d’art Conil

Located at the entrance of the Kasbah, this contemporary art gallery, led by Intha and Olivier Conil, is entirely dedicated to young Moroccan and international talents.

Las Chicas

Since its launch in 2012, this concept store has never ceased to amaze us with its selection of clothing, vintage jewelry (which we adore), mirrors, ceramics, candles, and more. We also love the tea room upstairs for a tasty break, as well as the Baba-men corner (originally just for men) which now offers a capsule collection for women.

Las Chicas
52 Kacem Guennoun Street, Kasbah Gate
Phone: 05 39 37 45 10
Open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

El Morocco Club

With refined Mediterranean cuisine in an elegant setting, El Morocco Club is a safe bet for having a drink and dinner before a concert or for a quick lunch under the fig tree that shades the restaurant’s terrace.

El Morocco Club
1 Kacha Street (Place du Tabor), Kasbah de Tanger
Phone: 05 39 94 81 39.

Nord Pinus Hotel Tanjazz 2023

This sublime establishment overlooking Riad Sultan Street has become one of the world’s  most legendary beautiful hotels with its inclusion in Condé Nast’s 2017 Gold List. Renting a room, dining, or simply having a drink, this is a must.

Nord Pinus Hotel
11 Riad Sultan Street, Kasbah
Phone: 06 61 22 81 40.

La Casa d’Italia Tanjazz 2023

This family-friendly restaurant is a well-known stop for locals. Ideally situated in a wing of le Palais Moulay Hafid (the Moulay Hafid Palace), it offers pizzas, meats, fish, and more. The menu caters to all tastes. It is a gourmet stop not to be missed during Tanjazz 2023. A piece of advice: remember to book your table in advance.

Casa d’Italia
Palace of Italian Institutions (Palais Moulay Hafid)
Phone: 06 18 64 00 53.

Some more suggestions:

Take some time to wander around the Kasbah. You’ll come across the boutique of the antique dealer and designer Adolfo de Velasco, a prominent figure in Tangier from the 1960s until his death in 2004, where you’ll find a selection of clothing and decorative art. Finally, take a moment to sip tea on the terrace of the Salon Bleu. The view is worth it.
